Great Books for Great Prices

Any book about a Beetle is a good book. The best way to purchase a book is to buy a used one on Amazon. I'm so glad I discovered that! You can buy used books for as little as a dollar or two. I've bought about 8 or 10 and when I'm done I pass them on to my other VW friends. Thanks Amazon!

OMG: Greatest Book About The Greatest People Mover Ever Built!

At first I thought this book was going to be about insect infestations in the Volkswagen (why isn't it "Volkswagon"?), based on the title. Just goes to show you the appropriateness of that old adage: "You can't judge a book by its cover". Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading about the venerable People Mover from the Vaterland. I am sure Hitler is rolling over in his grave, knowing that plenty of non-Aryans are enjoying this vehicle.

A treasure of a book

I don't remember exactly how I ever came across this book, but I'm so glad I did; reading this was a pleasure.

The book is a translation from French from the 17th century because the original 14th manuscript no longer survives. However, the fact that a copy did persist speaks to the quality of the information and authority Jean de Brie writes with. The book is straight-forward in its approach, and Jean de Brie has very logically divided the book up into the months of the year and how the ewes and lambs and rams should be cared for through each time of the year. He explains what the sheep should avoid eating, how to cure them of various ailments, when to sheer them, and how a shepherd should behave.

And behavior is the subtext through the entire book. Looking past the how-to knowledge of what to do with the flock, we get an insight into what kind of person Jean de Brie was. He was quite obviously a very patient man, but sure in his knowledge and I doubt he ever suffered a fool gladly. He was a loner (again, no surprise at all given his profession), but he was a very effective communicator and incredibly observant. His attention to avian behavior and how that predicts the weather to the exact ingredients needed to concoct a remedy for, say, mange, is that of someone highly intelligent and competent - the sort of person who would have been greatly valued by his employers and probably feared (either from jealousy or being intimidated by) by his fellow shepherds.

His sense of order, more than anything is what probably made him so good at his job. From explaining the mittens woven into an orderly checkered pattern, to making sure the shepherd's dog crosses his paws when laying down speaks to a man who very much knew how to be in command and control of everything around him. I would imagine his mind being very much at rest and ease when he would look out over his well ordered flock.

Jean de Brie was born to do the job and reminded me of Mr. Stevens from Remains of the Day: a person wholly devoted to his duty and in supreme command of everything he is charged with no matter the circumstances. And while there is no mention of his personal life, we do get glimpses of how he feels men in general should behave. At one point he speaks about how the sheep will get into the blackberry bushes and their wool will get caught in the leaves because they were greedy for the delicious berries. He compares that greedy, carefree behavior to that of a man who spends all day drinking at the bar and neglecting all his other duties. In short, he seemed very pious and I can imagine he might have been a bit of a bore at parties.

Yet he was the consummate professional and was willing and able to sacrifice himself in any way for his flock. One could imagine some large company making its employees read this book during a seminar as an allusion to how the perfect employee should act and react. And it would be just as easy to feel like you could never achieve his level of competence and maybe grow to resent him a little as a real company brown-noser.

And maybe that's why a person like him desires to be left alone on the heath: they know other people don't really like him, but that's just fine with him, too.

2016's Fantasy Book of the Year

SL Jesberger is one of those rare authors that I simply cannot get enough of. This becomes an even bigger compliment to her skills when I admit that, in general, I am definitely not a fan of fantasy. Her Allainshire trilogy sucked me in, and I was honored when she asked me to be a beta reader for this new stand alone (although I truly hope she will revisit this one someday.) Though I have nothing but praise for everything I have read of hers (no little feat with my aversion to worlds and creatures that don't agree with my experiences), I have to say that I think Silverlight is her best work to date.

Before I venture into the actual review, I must take a moment to gush over the cover. It is simply spellbinding and absolutely stunning. The tribal design on the sword continues to haunt me, as does the siren call of the cover model's eyes. I even caught my husband picking it up to look at it a number of times, and commenting on the beauty of the sword, and the cover overall. This is not typical for him; I honestly cannot remember him ever commenting on any other cover art (other than pointing out that a guitar on one rockstar romance was set for a left handed guitartist.) I would highly encourage everyone to order the paperback version of this book if only so you can truly appreciate the artistic beauty of the cover. If set on your coffee table, I guarantee your guests will not be able to resist picking it up for a closer look. The mesmerizing aesthetic is rivaled only by the contents held within.

Kymber is one of the most fascinating heroine's I have read in, perhaps, forever. The adopted daughter of the owners of a highly acclaimed academy for swordsmen, she was one of the most skilled students to have ever walked its hallowed halls. It was also there that she met her soul mate and love of her life, Magnus. Their combined skills and passion had them well set to rule the worlds they inhabit (and remember, throughout this review, that it is not easy to get me to immerse myself in books of places and creatures that don't exist in my realm of experience) that is until Kymber is betrayed by one she trusts deeply, Magnus' own brother, and sold into slavery to the ruler of the darkest country in their lands. Meanwhile, Magnus has been led to believe that Kymber was killed in battle, and has spent the years since in deep mourning for his lost love.

When he comes across a group of vulgar thieves attacking and stealing the few worldly possessions of a maimed and nearly feral woman living in the caves of the area he is traveling, he cannot believe he has found his Kymber. She attacks him as viciously as she is able to, as his brother had led her to believe that Magnus was the one who had turned her over to the terrible fate she had faced for years until she had managed to achieve a near miraculous escape. Ashamed of her disfigurement, learning her parents had passed on, and simply not knowing whom she can trust, she has lived hand to mouth in hiding.

Ms. Jesberger does such a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life, and the power and passion of their emotions is impossible to resist. From beautiful prose to bawdy humor, and everything in between, I savored every word of this one. I continue to hope that she will decide to make this the first book of a series, because I loved and admired Kymber's strength, resilience, anger, determination and passion, and Magnus' clueless alpha male behavior that almost hid the depth of his passion for only this woman and the goodness that ran through him. In his softer moments he will melt your heart, in his most thick headed ones you will share Kymber's anger and frustration and in his protective and concerned mode you will simply swoon. SL's way with words has very few rivals; I love her prosaic details of place and emotion and simply adore her sense of humor. It makes for an addicting combination - even though this one has not officially been released I am already anxious for something else from her.

I would give this at least 10 stars if I was able, and obviously it comes with my highest recommendations. For adult audiences only for sexual situations and explicit violence.

Book Review: Silverlight

Magnus Tyrix was riding to visit his sister, Karis, who he has not seen for nine years. Riding through the area brings back memories of his long dead love, Kymber Oryx, whom he fought beside and lost. He hears something coming from some caves south of Jalartha, a group of men are terrorizing a homeless woman. When she snatches his knife from the leader’s belt and executes maneuvers someone trained to do them, even with one mangled hand, he recognizes her as his long dead love Kymber. Except she is very much alive, though horribly thin, with a ragged haircut and dirty. Instead of visiting his sister, he takes her to a place where he can get her help. He discovers she thought he had been behind what happened to her, because of his brother Tariq and the barbarian, Garai. Eventually he takes her to his home to keep watch over her and train her back to the warrior she had been. He even promises to help her get his brother, plus retrieve her sword, Silverlight, from behind the throne of the barbarian Garai. For it was Garai who held her all those years, using her and making her fear. Magnus loves her enough to do anything for her. Even if it means sacrificing their future.

Silverlight is the romantic sword and sorcery we’ve been missing. It’s a mixture of Lord of the Rings and George RR Martin’s gritty, realistic saga, but Silverlight is still its own fantasy. One I am glad to add to my bookshelves.

**This was my Recommended Read for October 2007!**

Miranda Albright has a secret. Actually, more than one secret - but it all started when she first spied her decadent neighbor making love to a woman on the grounds of his estate. Although innocent, the young Miranda was captivated by the sight, and found herself drawn irresistibly back to the spot summer after summer when the handsome Earl was in residence at his country estate to spy on him and his various lovers.

Now Miranda's family is in dire straits financially and the only way she can save them is to offer her innocence to the Earl himself, Ethan Hamon. But Ethan wants more than her innocence. He wants her available to him for his debauchery for three entire months, to play with at his sensual whim. Little does he realize that before it is over, the sweet Miranda will have snared him heart and soul.

Sometimes a book resonates with you so strongly, but you cannot quite place your finger on what exactly about the story struck you so. For me, Jess Michaels' new book Everything Forbidden is just such a novel. Yes, the characters are compelling, the romantic dynamic is absolutely heart-wrenching at times, and the plot is entertaining.

But there is more to this story than just those elements. The way Michaels puts it all together makes you feel every moment as if you are in the book yourself. She builds empathy for all of her characters with seeming ease, and the book becomes more than just a story, at least while you are reading it.

It might be said that there are only so many tales to be told in the world, and while this may be true, the difference in a good story and a great story is the authors ability to make me forget I have ever before seen a similar plot. Jess Michaels has done just that with this book.

Ethan is a captivating leading man cast as a hero tormented with convictions that he can never have what his heart desires most. Breaking through his walls proves difficult, but not impossible for a heroine with the tenderness and spunk of the beautiful Miranda.

For anyone who loves historical romances, this touching book is a must-read! Do yourself a favor and buy your copy of Everything Forbidden now. You won't be sorry!

Miranda Albright is unable to forget the day she caught her family's neighbor, Ethan Hamon, the Earl of Rothschild, seducing his current lover. That image has stayed with her for three years providing Miranda with the courage to deliberately seek out the earl just to spy on him with his lovers.

Miranda's idyllic spying must come to an end however, when her family falls on hard times with the death of her father. Not only are they penniless, but Miranda has younger sisters that need a Season in order to find a husband. Unable to finance their seasons, Miranda has no choice but to make a decision that changes her life. She goes to her virile next door neighbor and offers the only thing of value she has in return for helping her sisters--her virginity and three months of any sexual pleasure of his choice.

Vowing not to let her heart get involved, Miranda enters into the relationship with Ethan having no concept of the sinful and sensuous times ahead. Slowly falling under his spell, Miranda knows that her time with Ethan is limited. When he asks the one thing of her she can't give, her sorrow knows no bounds. Denying herself the only man she will ever love, Miranda vows to continue on--if only she can convince her heart.

I can not stop thinking about EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN and the way the characters related to each other. I have always been intrigued by the English societal hierarchy and the laws relating to females. Women such as Miranda actually didn't have a choice, heaven forbid, after their fathers and husbands were no longer around to provide for them. While some might fault Miranda for her proposition to Ethan, I found her choice to be a no-brainer. She had watched this man make love and seduce women for years so she knew he would agree. She had guts and when she loved, she loved entirely.

Ethan's character is more complex. The product of a hell raising and promiscuous father who watched his mother drink herself to death, Ethan's heart was hardened against finding a wife and love. That is, until he met a tiny sprite of a woman named Miranda.

EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN by Jess Michaels soothed my historical loving soul. Add in romance mixed with sensuous and forbidden pleasures and Jess Michaels now has a fan for life.

For three summers, Miranda Albright secretly watches her neighbor,
Ethan Hamon, Earl of Rothschild, as he and his lovers perform wickedly
depraved acts on the grounds of his country estate. When her father
dies and her family is near financial ruin, Miranda approaches the
wicked earl for help. The earl negotiates a bargain. He will support
each of Miranda's three sisters for one seaso, both financially and
socially. In return, Miranda must submit to his passions for three
months.

Even though Miranda wishes for the passion she has witnessed from her
hiding place, she fears the bargain she has struck with Ethan.
Although she relishes what Ethan can do to her body, she fears what
Ethan can do to her heart.

I love historical romance. I love erotic romance. I adore the two
combined! Jess Michaels says in her bio that in every romance she
buys, she searches out `the good stuff'. Well, she sure can write
`the good stuff'! Everything Forbidden is a scorching hot romance.
Oh, to be debauched by Ethan Hamon! Eye-crossingly erotic with a

In his newest book, Maxwell has designed a simple yet profound compact-sized primer for those in leadership (or those who aspire to lead) who would love to sit at the feet of the leadership giants from the Bible.

Maxwell has chosen these biblical characters to highlight their brief history and accomplishments: Elijah, Elisha, Job, Jacob, Deborah, Isaiah, Jonah, Joshua and Daniel. He begins the book by opening the door to his study where he has three chairs --- one for himself, one for the reader, and one for the leader/hero who walks through his door to sit down for a chat and mentor for a while. In each chapter, Maxwell highlights the leadership scenario for which each biblical character is most well-known and then offers life lessons, a prayer from the leader to the reader, and leadership lessons, followed by a discussion guide that includes questions for the readers and suggested scripture readings.

Since each leader on which Maxwell focuses has unique gifts and talents that make him or her particularly suited for the role that God gave them, he points out and capitalizes on these various strengths.

Elijah: God loves you on your bad days.
Elisha: Give your best wherever God puts you.
Job: God sees the big picture.
Jacob: Let God have control of your life.
Deborah: God specializes in the unexpected.
Isaiah: God has a reason for our encounter with Him.
Jonah: God always gives us a second chance.
Joshua: God is greater than your greatest challenges.
Daniel: Have a purpose bigger than yourself.

One of the strongest elements of Maxwell’s text is that it doesn’t simply sugarcoat each biblical leader and only highlight his or her strong points. Rather, he allows readers to see their weaknesses as well and then gives evidence about how God used each person despite their character flaws. Readers will appreciate this insider’s look into each leader’s life and find especially helpful the section in each chapter where Maxwell offers them the leadership lessons these characters learned through their lives. He doesn’t shy away from some of real life’s most challenging enemies of developing into a strong leader. Instead, he places them front and center and then dismantles each one by teaching would-be leaders how to overcome obstacles in their own lives and work.

Of course, no Maxwell leadership book would be complete without at least a smattering of his distinctive personal style that get readers smiling, laughing and chortling along with him. There is good reason why America loves John Maxwell so much. He’s utterly transparent and aims to encourage and inspire everyone with whom he comes into contact, whether that’s in person, through the radio, or via the written word. And he succeeds.

Part one provides detailed coverage of the fundamental concepts and generic techniques in diesel engine system design.
