About the Author
P. N. Singer is a Research Associate in the School of Historical Studies at the University of Newcastle. He wrote his doctoral thesis at the University of Cambridge on Galen's psychological works and researches and publishes on a range of areas in ancient Greek thought, in particular the interaction of medical and philosophical theories, concepts of the mind, works of practical ethics and ancient textual commentary. Further interests include ancient Greek drama, drama practice and classical Indian philosophy. His Galen: Selected Works (1997), in the Oxford World's Classics series, represented the first ever translation into English of a number of central works of the medical-philosophical author.

At 13:55 hours that day rolling Syrian cannon thunder was heard all along the front on the Golan Heights, and dense, black smoke shrouded it completely.

Many accounts of the Yom Kippur War have been written. But this is the first behind-the-scenes look at the Northern Command preparations for war during that fateful summer, when the Syrian army in the north, together with the Egyptian army in the south, coordinated a blitzkrieg offensive against Israel.
This book offers fresh insight into the pre-war debate that raged between the Northern Command and the Intelligence Branch that believed Syria was not looking for war. For the first time, the reader will be privy to the decision-making details that threatened to overpower the IDF Command. The Generals, who were in command, describe in their own words the pivotal battles that changed the course of the war, as well as the disastrous effects of the “hindsight evaluation” after the war was won reverberated throughout the corridors of power.
The four contributors of this book were assisted by a team of researchers and other army commanders, under the direction and coordination of Military Historian, Brig. Gen. (Res.) Dr Dani Asher.

A bit too technical

The book is very detailed and provides a lot of information; however, it does get confusing and a bit too technical at times. Looks like the authors, all from the military, intended the book for their colleagues rather than the general public. I missed the maps, particularly that of Mt. Hermon. Also, the Kindle edition has typos and cut-off sentences.

The most comprehensive account of the Golan Heights front during the Yom Kippur War. This book surpasses and corrects information from Duel for the Golan, which until now stood as the standard account for the fight on the Golan. The author was a former Israeli Military Intelligence officer and has written a number of books on the Yom Kippur War in Hebrew. This book was translated to English and the translation was very well done. The writing is dry and very "military" style, but the information in the book is basically new and revealing.

When Penningroth proposed going to Russia to bring relief to the Allied prisoners, John Mott said no, fearing the response from the Allied governments. The Y was no longer apolitical, and Penningroth was forced to choose between his career and his conscience... Based on Louis Penningroth's papers and ten years of research, this "novel history" sheds light on a moment when a man of faith, with the wisdom of a serpent and the gentleness of a dove, braved the wolves of the world to live Christ's admonition to his disciples: "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me."

Bravery

This was written by the nephew of the man that the book is about. I know his aunt, the man's daughter, and have been waiting for over 30 yrs. for this book to come out. I was so excited when she called me to say it was out on Amazon Kindle. I got a Kindle for Christmas, so I downloaded it and it came immediately. It is written as a novel, but is actually more of a history. If you are interested in Russia and history, this is a great way to learn more. Very few people know about this period or the heroic part he played in getting prisoners out of Russia.

Make sure you get the latest edition

A fantastic resource for anyone working with track and field (Athletics) athletes, and really anyone working in sport. The author presents a lot of information here. Now while some of the scientific foundations early on in the book could be better covered by other texts, the latter portions of the book are outstanding. Frank Dick illustrates his points with practical examples of how he has applied principle into practice.
Make sure you get the latest edition - which is vastly updated and relates much of the information to team sports such as football (soccer). Some of the book is still dated, but as I have said in other reviews, this does not mean it should just be written off right there and then. Tried and trusted methods still should carry weight in the modern world of sport science and training theory.

I'm an architect and a creator of 3D structures based on 3D polyhedral iterations. This has become my bible for researching, exploring, understanding and creating new solids to be used for furniture, building structures, vases and containers.

I have several books on this subject, this one is without question, the best work on this subject that I have ever encountered. The images, photos sketches and wireframes are plentiful and profound.
