Interesting dam hydraulics book for professional

I am a dam engineer , specialized in hydraulics.

I'm happy Prof Senturk wrote this good dam hydraulics book since there are few books on the subject.

However this book is not a real bible like US Army corps or USBR manuals.

Lots of good theory but some errors. Examples are not always clear.

It is a good book but for professionals only, better if experts in the field.

I really enjoyed this book and it left me wanting more information about mindfulness. I had heard about it through secular psychology classes and groups that I was in, so I had to explore it and see if it was congruent to Christianity and our practices. I would definitely recommend this book. It is a way to wet the appetite.

About the Author
Zelda Fitzgerald was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1900. She became a 'roarer' of the pre-1920s and met F.Scott Fitzgerald at one of the many social dances she attended. They married in 1920 and began a decade of riotous living in France and America. Zelda wrote magazine articles and short stories, and at twenty-seven became obsessed with a career as a dancer. The couple became increasingly eccentric and erratic; Scott became an alcoholic and Zelda developed schizophrenia. In 1932 Zelda became seriously ill and wrote Save me the Waltz in six weeks to the envy of her husband who had been writing Tender is the Night for more than five years. Zelda died in a hospital fire in 1947.

Such an underrated novel

This is a very beautiful book. Written in several weeks while in a hospital, it retells Mrs. Fitzgerald's life in very vivid colors - although it is a novel, not an autobiography. The character's name is Alabama Beggs. We go from her remarkable childhood and youth in the south, to her marriage to the artist David, her unrequited love affair with a French aviator, to the unbelievably brilliant passages as a struggling ballet dancer with the Russian Ballet (Madame Egorova being her teacher) when it had relocated to Paris after the Revolution. Her descriptions of her enchanting childhood and popularity as a belle during WWI, the amazing chapters working with the impoverished Russian and French ballet dancers are high literature indeed! She is a master of description whether describing flowers, fauna, her husband's beautiful physical attributes, her sister's tragically ill-fated romances or her warm-hearted mother and besieged and stern father. For all fans of the Fitzgeralds, it is an enchanting read! A famous actress once said to me (she knew the Fitzgeralds) when I asked her about "Save Me the Waltz" she replied: "But my dear, it is my bible!"

Wins Out Over Husband's 'Tender is the Night'

This uneven but fascinating book is the last great thing Zelda did before losing her spirit completely under "treatment" in a NC mental hospital.

Because he wrote it as an answer to Waltz, I immediately read F Scott's Tender is the Night (a creepy whitewash of the very sinister suppression of Zelda's spirit and Scott's many flings). But Waltz would be best read alongside any of the biographical books about Zelda Fitzgerald (see Milford, Cline, Wagner-Martin). As a time capsule, it's invaluable. Utterly fascinating to discover slang that disappeared, slang that endured. What passed as the zenith of witty repartee in the jazz age comes off today as just so much drunken verbal oneupmanship by phony snobs. I winced. Often.

But in this book, she captures a real physical joy of being beautiful and popular, a giddy tingle of fame and fortune, the reckless confidence of affluence and privilege. Call it a real taste of the roaring twenties, but there are plenty of wealthy drunks living this sort of high life today. It just seems more charming when we think of it as the history of the lost generation.

No matter time or location, reader is at just one degree of separation from the life of the most charming American couple in Paris in those days. I loved reading the atmospheric sections on wild parties that lasted for days on end (far more intense than F Scott's own Tender). And Zelda's accounts of the bitter struggles of ballet dancers were an eye opener for me.

But the book is not the work of a polished writer. There's no sense of pace, and we glean more from context than anything else. Love affairs (revealed by biographers) are agonizingly glossed over (probably due to her husband acting as initial editor), her toddling daughter is annoyingly precocious and articulate, and the endless similes drove this reader up the wall. Flower fetishists will no doubt achieve states of ecstasy reading sections of this book, those a total bore for anyone else.

Perhaps with more practice, Zelda could have become so much more than the beautiful ornament of her husband, the big handsome literary star. There's evidence of talent in Waltz, and the fact that she could crank it out in 2 months' time... well, she had the drive and determination to shine.

Richard J. Colwell is Professor Emeritus of Music Education at the University of Illinois and the New England Conservatory of Music. He is the founding editor of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education and the Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning . He is also a Guggenheim scholar and a member of MENC's Hall of Fame. Michael Hewitt is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music at the University of Maryland. An active guest conductor and clinician, he also serves of the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.

The Teaching of Instrumental Music (3rd Edition)

This 450-page book is a music education textbook which covers the basics of teaching instrumental music for would-be or present teachers. It has become known as an essential "core text" for teachers of instrumental music.

The first three chapters of the book discuss general background: Chapter 1 gives a short history of instrumental music, while Chapters 2 & 3 deal with the objectives and evaluation of music. This material is O.K., but wasn't especially useful for me.

The largest section of the text devotes a whole chapter to each of the instruments commonly played in a student band and orchestra. I found this detailed information to be very helpful. The middle section also includes separate chapters on the "Principles of . . . Winds, Brass, Strings, Percussion, etc.," which introduce the chapters about specific instruments in each of these categories.

The most "down-to-earth," practical chapters are Chapters 4 & 5, which discuss how to motivate students and how to work effectively with administrators, and Chapters 24 & 25 at the end of the book about rehearsal routines and how to rehearse concert literature. I read these chapters first because they seem the most essential for a new instrumental music teacher.

Book for those looking to be instrumental teachers

This book is full of information, from teaching methods to information on each instrument and instrument family commonly used in school music programs. It has just about all you need to know about each instrument to teach beginning students, and is a great resource for aspiring and current instrumental music teachers, especially at the secondary level (Jr. High/High School). If you're looking for books containing actual music, look elsewhere, but if you want information on the instruments and on teaching music, this is one of the best comprehensive resources.

About the Author
George MacDonald (1824 – 1905) was a Scottish author and poet. He is also a Great Spiritual Master of his century who spent several years as Christian Minister in his native Scotland before he became a well-known author for his fantasy and fairytale masterpiece work such as Golden Key and Phantastes.

Excellent finale and introduction to MacDonald's sermons

The Johannensen editions of these books _are_ gorgeously solid without being flashy or pretentious, btw. I highly recommend buying from them.

MacDonald wrote five volumes of 'Unspoken Sermons' (the title of the first three volumes); each a cycle of 12 sermons leading into each other (he always ends one sermon with the verse upon which the next is based). This duplex includes _Hope of the Gospel_ and _Miracles of Our Lord_, both of which are in essence extensions of the Unspoken series.

MoOL (which doesn't feature the usual crossover between chapter/sermons, btw) makes an especially good reference for fans and students (like myself) of C.S. Lewis' _Miracles: A Preliminary Study_, as Lewis definitely drew on this book for the form and presentation of his chapters of philosophical analysis of the miracles wrought by Jesus. (In fact, all the Unspokens give excellent insight into Lewis' theological backgrounding.) MacDonald presents a penetrating theological and devotional presentation of the Lord's works, emphasizing the call to faith in Jesus personally inherent in each one. The book can be read as an auxiliary to the other Unspokens, or as an introduction to the series as a whole.

HotG works best, in my opinion, as a summary of positions developed in the three main Unspoken volumes (although all the sermons are also quite original); consequently I always read it last. {g} The first few sermons trace Jesus' early life and ministry, giving fascinating insights on His Jerusalem Temple adventure and His baptism,as well as on the meaning inherent in His given name. From these points, MacDonald structures the remaining chapters around the Beatitudes, presenting them as the clearest way to understand the gospel given by God through (and as) Jesus.

Scholarly standards are quite high in MacDonald's work, although this shouldn't scare off potential readers: he constantly brings us back to practical applications of all the principles discussed.

If I had to recommend any single series of books (outside the Scriptures themselves) that every Christian should read (and while quite conservative the books will be theologically challenging to Christians all across the spectrum), the Unspoken Sermons, including these two extensions, would definitely be the one.

Hein does to MacDonald what Jefferson did to the Bible.

In the essay "Sorrow--The Pledge of Joy", George MacDonald wrote: "Out upon such miserable theologians as . . . so cut and pare the words of the Lord as to take the very life from them, quenching all their glory and colour". You won't find these words in the edited version of this essay in _Life Essential_; in my opinion, Hein has so cut and pared the words of MacDonald as to take the very life from them, quenching not all, but much, of their glory and color.

In the introduction, Hein warns us that the editing has taken place, resulting in about half of MacDonald's words being discarded. The ostensible reason is that MacDonald tended to use florid language that is awkward to the modern ear, and that he tended to repeat himself. Search the Internet for MacDonald's original texts and compare them to Hein's editions and see if you don't agree with me that the language Hein cut was often glorious. And when you examine the deletions it will be obvious that elimination of repetition can't explain all of them. On the contrary, the deleted passages often make points not made by the surviving text, points that perhaps made Hein uncomfortable (like, in "Sorrow--The Pledge of Joy", the eternal nature of human relationships: "A heaven without human love it were inhuman, and yet more undivine to desire; it ought not to be desired by any being made in the image of God.")

Do yourself a favor and buy the lovely Johannesen editions of MacDonald's original works instead.

I found this treatise one of the most challenging, the most ringingly true summary of the gospel I have ever encountered. At first I thought it was "works oriented," but then I started realizing that, as they say in AA, nothing changes if nothing changes. Obedience can be as simple as praying when you are blessed with the impulse.
