About the Author

Dr. Donald Chu, PhDPT, ATC, CSCS, FNSCA, is a professor emeritus of kinesiology and physical education at California State University at Hayward, where he taught for more than 20 years. He is director and founder of Athercare Fitness & Rehabilitation in the San Francisco Bay area, which specializes in sport performance training, fitness programs, physical therapy, and clinical psychology.

Dr. Chu has developed an extensive reputation in the field of sport rehabilitation and fitness and conditioning. He pioneered research-supported plyometric training in the Western hemisphere and is revered throughout the strength and conditioning community for enhancing modern sports’ most defining athletic factor: power. Chu has been credited with bringing plyometric training to the attention of coaches, athletes, and fellow professionals in sport conditioning through his application of theoretical knowledge into practical demonstrations.

The author of six books, Chu has also written articles in refereed journals and contributed chapters to many books on sports medicine. More than 140,000 copies of his seminal book on the topic, Jumping Into Plyometrics, have been sold since 1994. He has presented extensively to professional groups around the world and consulted with athletes and teams at every level—including Olympians and professionals—on the development of training and conditioning programs.

Dr. Chu holds certifications as an athletic trainer (ATC) from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He has served on the board of directors for both organizations and is a past president of the NSCA. He resides in Alameda, California.

Gregory D. Myer, PhD, FACSM, CSCS,*D, is currently the director of research and the Human Performance Laboratory for the Division of Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and is also serving as the senior research advisor to the Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention. He also maintains his primary faculty appointment in the departments of pediatrics and orthopaedic surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and secondary appointments in the athletic training division at Ohio State University. He is a member, lecturer, and honoree of the ACSM, NSCA, and NATA for his breakthrough research, including his defining work on the development of prevention strategies in knee injury. Myer’s work in the Human Performance Laboratory allows him to integrate the most advanced research findings into training protocols for athletic development and injury prevention. Dr. Myer works with athletes from preadolescence to professional level and speaks to coaches around the world seeking to update their own training programs.

Dr. Myer is the author of Strength and Jump Training for Volleyball and several book chapters related to his research on the biomechanics of sport performance and training for injury prevention. He has also authored over 150 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He resides in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Shows the coach and athlete how to draw upon tremendous power when it's needed

Garnering power when it's most called for is critical in sports and, for that matter, in life. What I like most about this book is that it's all backed by science. There are no guesses. No judgements and no theories. It's all factual. Everything has been studied and data is provided.

Of course, plyometric training has been a part of sports conditioning programs for some twenty years. The problem is, many athletes are still doing it all wrong. As a result, they're suffering injuries - sometimes major injuries that put them on the sideline for life.

When done correctly, as you'll discover in this book, plyometric training can prevent these injuries. Everything is research-based. That means you can depend on it.

An essential pick-up for any one who regrets retirement upon finding how much "work" it can be.

Retirement brings with it much clutter, and it's easy for anyone who's accustomed to a daily schedule with all the "extra" business once taken care of by the employer (health, medical and dental bills, disability insurance, Social Security, annuity income), to feel dazed and confused, even perplexed and occasionally overwhelmed by all of the "secondary" concerns that require judicious choices not to mention poring through mountains of mailings, sorting out various plans, and being careful to note deadlines.

One of the more daunting programs, even before all the recent notoriety of ObamaCare, is Medicare. Not to worry. Patricia Barry's book explains the program in lucid, organized prose, separating the essentials from the less relevant information, and in a manner that enables the reader to make the choices that will ensure the best care at the most affordable price--including the distressful situations we may have witnessed in our parents without applying them to our own lives--until now.

Of most help to me was the explanation of Part D, which prepares anyone who has used, or possibly will be prescribed, expensive medications for, say, a cholesterol problem or an even more serious condition. Here's where the most choices are to be made. Is the cheapest plan necessarily the best bet? Is the most highly rated plan necessarily the one to select? And what about plans that offer two "slightly" different options at "substantially" different prices? How should you go about selecting between the two? And with respect to any of the plans, are they irrevocable or can the individual who is now eligible for Medicare change his or her mind and select a different plan? If so, when can the decision be made? How often? Can I change my mind a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time, possibly returning to the plan I started with?

Barry's book enabled me not only to distinguish between the forest and the trees but to toss several stacks of information that I had previously torn out of magazines and/or downloaded from the internet. For the present, it's the only book you'll need about Medicaare--at once reducing some of the clutter and setting your mind at rest about all of those saved articles you had "intended" to read (just be careful not to do the same with this book!)

During this past summer, I tried to order this book, but it was not available. I ordered it and began the wait. The book just arrived and it is very well written, thorough and easy to read. I wish I had been able to read it this summer. Instead, I had to order several other books to get all of the info that is contained within this book. I can recommend this book highly.

Lars' detailed study into the significance of Kalinga tattooing proceeds with an illustrated discussion of the artistic motifs that comprise Kalinga tattoo art. This chapter, "Kalinga Tattooing Motifs" is an absolute must read for anyone seeking knowledge (spiritual or otherwise) of the real roots of tribal tattooing practices that are largely disappearing around the world today. Because warrior culture, headhunting, and religious ritual permeated nearly every facet of Kalinga tattooing practice, "Warrior Culture of the Kalinga" focuses on these customs. Finally, "Mark of the Four Waves Tribe" documents the artistic achievements of a growing number of young Filipino-Americans who since 1998 have each made a conscious individual effort to revive the indigenous tattooing traditions of the Kalinga and other tribal peoples of the Philippines. Lars Krutak and the photographers documenting the tattoo culture of the Kalinga people have done an amazing job of providing a rich and "thick" description of this practice. The book is stunningly beautiful--filled with cultural stories and tattoo practices that are disappearing. Kudos to Lars and the team that put it together.

I'll admit this book comes with a hefty price tag, however if you're really interested in the subject matter or planning to get some Filipino tattoos yourself then I highly recommend it.

The delivery was nice and the book came sealed in plastic when I got it. The actual book is very nicely put together with quality pages and a strong hard cover, in the same way other coffee table or tattoo gallery books are made. There tons of full color high quality photos alongside a lot of good educational content throughout. Again this book is worth the money if you are truly dedicated to the subject matter. So if you are going to get tattoos like these, be smart and study what they are all about first!

Worth the money

Beautifully written. I was hesitant about spending this much on a book, but once I saw it, I was not disappointed. The pages are thick and made of good quality, heavy duty paper. This could easily be used as a textbook and will make a great coffee table book. Amazing pictures throughout. A very inspiring book. I look forward to passing this book on to the generations after me.
