good reference book

I work as an analytical chemist mainly using IR and Raman for unknown identification and for studying various chemical reactions.

This book, together with the The Handbook of Infrared and Raman Characteristic Frequencies of Organic Molecules by Lin~Vien, are the two books that I use almost on a daily base. With the electronic IR/Raman library becoming more and more popular, it is no longer necessary for your to remember all the peak frequencies/intensity. But having a book that compiles all the group frequencies and explains how the various chemical environments could affect the vibrational modes is a must-have if you are a serious vibrational spectroscopist.

i usually use this book for quick reference of the charts or look up a band at a particular frequency. When I want a systematic description of a particular modes or a class of molecules, I would use the book from Lin-Vien. But both book contain both (charts and texts/description/explanation). This book looks more modern and slightly better-organized.

This book is a great reference for analyzing FTIR data. It is very complete and with it in paperback, easy to tote around. The organization of this book is logical and is a great quick reference.

It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman ...

This book is now quite old (copyright 1991) but the information it contains is still perfectly valid. It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman needs to know about the 'mechanics of her reproductive system' book. As well as the usual 'straight out of the High School Biology book' stuff regarding menstrual cycles, it goes into considerable (but not too deep) depth about sexually transmissible diseases, how abortions are performed, self examination, other medical procedures such as hysterectomy, vaginal reconstruction, tubal ligation and even vasectomy. This could be a good book for a mother to give to a daughter in her mid-teens. The daughter would keep it on her book shelf and browse it as and when she feels the need. The many photos of women's genitals are probably reassuring to a young woman that what her genitals look like is normal, but it also means this is not a book to leave on the coffee table, or have in a high school library.
My only criticism of the book would be that a lot of the black and white drawings would have been easier to understand if they had been colour.
The target audience for this book is very specific, but if you are in that audience, this is a very good book.

Worth every penny

From the amazing illustrations by then-artist, now-nurse Suzann Gage of everything important to know about women's bodies and reproductive health--from cervical and breast self exams and the effect areas of various forms of birth control, to an "inner view of a woman's breasts" that shows how "milk secretion [is] like a shower head" (wish I'd seen that before I breast-fed!), a wonderful vulva/hymen/cervix photo gallery, and radical redefinitions of the biology of the clitoris--this is a fantastic book for any girl or woman who wants to know how her body works. It was a powerful publication in 1981 and it's just as good today. Further, it's a reminder that the 1970s nurtured a flourishing of activists who believed in self/adult education, and produced widely accessible and useful publications. The book should be updated and reissued, but until then, buy the original publishing--it's worth the cost.

As a feminist sex educator this book is the closest I'll ever get to having a Sex Bible about how a woman's body functions. Whenever I have a question I go to my bookshelf and start reading "A New View." These women are among the many unsung heroes. Their book was originally published by Simon & Schuster but at the end of the first year, one of the "good old boys" finally noticed they described how women could easily administer their own abortions at home with some thin plastic tubing and a suction pump. The book was GONE in a flash! I"ll let you figure out why.

Phenomenal

In the back of this book, the authors include a pretty comprehensive reading list for those who are seriously considering becoming SEALs. While I have only read two of the books from the list, they both came from the "Required Reading" section. Those books include "The Warrior Elite" and "The Finishing School" by Dick Couch. I bought this book last night and finished it an hour ago. This book belongs at the top of its own revised "Required Reading" list. Half of this is due to the fact that it describes in detail a more updated version of BUD/S, and is therefore a bit more relevant. The other half is due to the sheer frankness and honesty of the coauthor and narrator, Mark Owens.

I've read quite a few other books about other post-9/11 SEALs and their exploits. All are fascinating, but sometimes I've felt they stray into the self-indulgent territory. Not so in this book.** This book is the most refreshingly honest and objective thing I've ever read about BUD/S and what it takes to make it through. Mr. Owens is an officer and describes his personal route via OCS, but also details the exact steps an enlisted man would take and the best way to prepare for either option.

Like many men, I've often wondered if I had the ability to be a SEAL. It's something that I've wrestled with for a long time, but Mr. Owens did something that no other SEAL author was able to do. Through his forthright accounts, he made me realize the SEAL lifestyle is not for me, and for that, I'm grateful.

I gave this book five stars because it educated me in a way no other book on the same subject has done. Through this education, it answered a burning question and also made me laugh out loud from the politically incorrect humor the Team guys share. If being a SEAL is what you actually want, this book will get you there. If you think being a SEAL is what you want, this will answer the question and then, if it's right for you, it will get you there. If not, it will at least give you a reason to laugh and appreciate the guys who do what most people, such as myself, can only dream of.

**To be clear, I've loved all the books I've read about the SEALs, pre- and post-9/11. They served as fascinating character studies and made me relieved that we have so many great men volunteering for such a demanding and necessary job. The real deal for wannabe SEALs

The title of this book says it all: “Breaking BUD/S: How regular guys can become Navy SEALs.” The author is an active SEAL, writing under the pen name DH Xavier for security purposes.
If you have a young relative who's thinking about becoming a SEAL, by all means give him this book. It's a first-class "weeder-outer." If he’s truly serious about becoming a SEAL, this book will help him achieve his dream. If he's not truly serious about becoming a SEAL, this book will discourage him from trying and wasting his time.
"Breaking BUD/S" covers its subject as thoroughly as any book I’ve read on any subject. It lists the four possible paths to BUD/S training (Naval Academy, ROTC, Officers Candidate School, and regular enlistment), giving the pros and cons of each and a step-by-step guide for following whichever path is chosen. The rest of the book describes, in minute detail, how a candidate can survive BUD/S once he's been selected.
Xavier spells out what a candidate should do—and not do—to prepare himself for the challenge and survive it. He covers both the physical and mental aspect of everything: how to interact with instructors and fellow candidates; how to conquer the frequent, overpowering urge to quit; the least difficult way to run in soft sand; even the proper way to super-glue the thread on a uniform button to keep it from coming off.
Throughout the book, he illustrates his advice with real-life examples of candidates who succeeded and failed—and why. He even gives tips on how a candidate can outmaneuver his instructors/tormentors (cheat), and explains why instructors/tormentors admire candidates with that ability. Xavier also touches on the politics of military life, especially for officers. It’s a vitally important subject, as anyone who's served in the armed forces will recognize, but one that’s usually ignored.
The book’s strongest point is that Xavier is brutally frank about everything associated with the selection process. Here's his description of how a candidate begins Mask Appreciation training: "On the pool deck...you lay with your head hanging over the water and your feet pointed away. You lean back, dunking your head in the water at JUST the right angle to force water to surge up your nose. While your head's underwater...you fill your dive mask with water and put it on."
I never wanted to be a Navy SEAL, but if I had, I would've dropped the idea after reading Xavier's book. So will any young wannabe who's watched "Sole Survivor" 24 times and thinks he wants to become a mighty warrior. If you have a young relative who fits that description, do him—and the Navy and SEALs—a favor, and give him "Breaking BUD/S."

The ultimate BUD/S guide!

This is a truly interesting read. I'm a Navy SEAL candidate. I've read every SEAL book worth reading, browsed every SEAL website worth browsing, watched every SEAL show worth watching, spoken to SEALS, and even worked out for a little bit at SDV-1 at Pearl Harbor. I thought I knew everything there was to know (not to sound arrogant). I was convinced that there was nothing else left to learn before I left for BUD/S. A friend of mine recommended this book to me, and I figured I would give it a shot, and couldn't put it down! This book is AMAZING. It not only tells you the basics, like how to work out, what the training is like, etc, but where this book really shines is telling you the LITTLE THINGS. This includes:
-How to maximize much needed sleep every night
-Where to have your uniform dry cleaned
-Where the best barber shop is
-What to look for while preparing for inspections
-How to keep your gear in tip-top shape
-How not to attract extra unwanted attention
-What kind of guys typically make it
-How to be a team player and not screw over your boat crew
-Fun things to do while waiting to class up
-Drown proofing techniques
-Navy trivia you should know going in
-TONS of other priceless information

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying because you read this book, you're gonna pass BUD/S. That is entirely up to you. What I will promise you, is that this book will cut down on many avoidable beatings, and will give you the tools to make BUD/S as easy as the hardest training known to man could possibly be.

This book could be a good resource for CISM or CISSP exam. It has pretty much covered all the titles that are needed for information security. Author could have made it more practical with some examples and orders of how enterprise security architecture could look like but not a big deal.
I would recommend this book for those who are starting to work in Infosec category. The importance of business architecture and top down approach is something I liked on the book.

The book aims to be a "complete guide for those who would like to become an Enterprise Security Architect". Even more "After reading this book, you should be able to use these techniques and procedures in any enterprise company with any field."

[what it actually delivers]
I'll skip the grammar issues and typos which (for the abstract phrases) can make reading/consuming the book difficult. My main disappointment with this book was the depth of the content, a sort of glossary with very generic explanations of security concepts and what each Enterprise Security Architecture Framework looks like.
I believe the book offers a general idea of what security architecture is and how it could be implemented/audited etc... I didn't feel anywhere the experience of the author making a difference; seems more like a paper you put together over a weekend using free source online.
So if you have absolutely no clue of what security architecture is then the book will probably help you form an oppinion.

Doughty Defenders of their Faith

The Knights of St. John of the Hospital were a crusading order who are mentioned in the background of "The Maltese Falcon." But they served as much more than the set up for a Dashiel Hammett mystery. Many historians consider the Knights to be the first practitioners of nursing. They could crack their enemies' skulls and then expertly apply the bandages. Nursing, however, was not their greatest contribution. After the collapse of the Crusading movement, they became Europe's Mediterranean bulwark against Turkish expansion.
When they were expelled from the Holy Land, they set up on the island of Rhodes, and weathered two concerted efforts by the Turks to dislodge them from the island.This, then is the story of those two campaigns, and it describes them in all their gallantry and savagery.
They finally succumbed to the might of the Turkish Empire, but were able to retire from Rhodes in good order. After being dislodged from Rhodes, the Knights moved to Malta, and there withstood another epic seige which served as the prelude to the decisive Battle of Lepanto. Their efforts truly helped to save Europe from Turkish domination. All in all, this is an entertaining and informative history of a pivotal period in European history.

Read before you visit the island . As you stroll the medieval walled city you will find yourself thinking of the last Europeans to defend Christendom this close to Asia. It was the Turk who came here in the two sieges described. The Knights of St. John were deposed during the second siege and were allowed to leave, eventually reestablishing the Hospitallers in Malta. Look for evidence of the blood and carnage of the sieges as you walk this stop on the summer cruise route. Hangings, beheadings, Knights of Christ and Ottoman Turks alike displaying the heads of their enemies on dripping pikes;
Could all this have really happened here in this jewel in the blue Aegean? Yes it did and the story of it is written for the history buff and traveler alike in this short entertaining book
