Great advice, easy read

I give this book 5 stars because it was so easy for me to read (I have a really short attention span) and easy for me to grasp the excellent advice Ms. Miller dished out. If you're not careful, you may think the author is a little brash in her advice giving. But each chapter is very short (no more than 2-3 pages average) and blunt and to the point. She smartly sums up each chapter with 2-3 bulleted point short sentences. No long, drawn out explanations about crap we already know. She is like the girlfriend that fusses at you when you tell her something stupid you did in your dating life. This book is a nice self-esteem booster, especially if you are struggling a little bit in dealing with guys you are dating. I am giving this book out as gifts.

The only dating book that really works!

Right away, after following just a few of the tips from Romy Miller I was getting men stuffing phone numbers in my hand, men turning to look at me and asking me out...and I didn't even need to say a word. She basically puts very simple and powerful information in your hands to have men chasing after you. I can't imagine ever needing to read another book on dating again. Within 48 hours of finishing the book a man I knew and was crazy about from a year ago showed up, approached me and asked me out. Crazy coincidence maybe, but I can't recommend the book highly enough. It worked for me and I just know now it is the women who have all the power and men should be chasing us! Good luck to y'all. This book is the bible on attracting men's attention and having them want you. Thank you, Romy.

Really BEST! dating book!!!

I've read quite a number of dating advice books, like Why men love/marry bitches, the dating rules, etc. I found this book really really gives me the right attitude and the power I want. While the "Why men" series get me being too aggressive and not being myself (which is a bit uncomfortable to me), this book really says dating tips best, and I know it works this time. I just finished this book, and I know I am going to change and be a lot more comfortble out there, and I am SELF-CONFIDENT NOW!!! I know I am going to be great! Really thanks!!! I highly recommend this book. It's really really a nice gift.

Among the accounts is a rare Nez Perce description by Sam Lott (Many Wounds) of the 1862 murder of two Nez Perce by white miners. Dennis Baird and his colleagues scoured the country and collected the existing firsthand accounts of that time of very rapid change. White officials, officers, missionaries, and journalists were lucid, compassionate, and surprisingly in favor of the Nez Perce. However, the prevailing national attitude toward Indians supported the wholesale "taking" of Indian land, which led to the disastrous Nez Perce Treaty of 1863 and greatly downsized their reservation.

This is one of the first graphic novels I had ever read. The mangas are so cool but I've only read until the 5th one! Okay, I haven't read the mangas in about 5 or 6 years so I can't really remember what they're about. All I remember is Chinmi trys to get into a school/temple(I think) and he is required to go through multiple tests to get in. He is joined by many other peers and stuff happens=) really crappy description i know, but i know it's action-packed.

Five star classic tale of revenge

The Case of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe is a classic tale of revenge. Since there are over a dozen posts here, my review will take a particular slant: what German pessimistic philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer has to say about the psychology of revenge and how the revengeful narrator in Poe's tale relates to Schopenhauer's insights.

Schopenhauer says we all suffer as the result of nature or chance but, as humans, we recognizes that is simply the way life works. He then writes, "Suffering caused by the will of another, on the other hand, includes a quite peculiar and bitter addition to the pain or injury itself, namely the consciousness of someone else's superiority, whether in point of strength or of cunning, together with that of one's own impotence." It's that person to person dynamic that gives us the real sting; someone intentionally shoves or hits us, humiliates or insults us, and, for whatever reason, we simply take it. This is what happened in the aristocrat-narrator's mind - he was insulted by Fortunato. I say `in the aristocrat-narrator's mind' since we as readers don't know if Fortunato actually intended to insult him.

Schopenhauer sees two phases of compensation for the person who has suffered at the hands of another. 1) direct and legal - a stranger hits us and we take him to court and win a settlement 2) revenge - to deal with the psychological afterglow of the stranger's blow. Here are his words: "Recompense, if possible, can cure the injury done; but that bitter addition, the feeling `and that is what I have to put up with from you' which often hurts more than the injury itself, can be neutralized only by revenge." The narrator says his is not of a nature to merely threat. Being an aristocrat himself, that is, someone who is accustom to living life and having life on his own terms, he will not even consider direct or legal action or a mere threat. His first step is revenge, and a revenge where he will never be discovered or punished for exacting his revenge and a revenge where Fortunato will be fully aware he is the avenger.

Here is the payoff for the avenger as Schopenhauer sees it: "By returning the injury, either by force or by cunning, we demonstrate our superiority over him who has injured us and thereby annul the proof he gave of his superiority over us. Thus the heart acquires the satisfaction it thirsted for. Where, consequently there is much pride or much vanity, there will also be much reveangefulness." This is where the philosopher's insights fit the characters in Poe's tale like a glove. Fortunato is a pompous aristocrat, a man full of himself, a man who, in the course of the story, calls another man by the name of Luchresi an ignoramus since Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry. The narrator, in turn, with his vaults and wines, his family crest and family motto, is filled to the brim with pride and vanity. And as he locks Fortunato to the damp wall and seals him up in the cold, dark nave, we as readers get the feeling his revenge is as sweet as sweet can be. As Alfred Hitchcock said, "Revenge is sweet and not fattening."

Schopenhauer's words on the psychology of the avenger are penetrating. He writes, "But, as every fulfilled desire reveals itself more or less as a delusion, so does that for revenge. Usually the pleasure we hoped for from it is made bitter by the pity we afterwards feel; indeed, an exacted revenge will often subsequently break the heart and torment the conscience; we no longer feel the motivation which drove us to it, but the proof of our wickedness remains visibly before us." Poe's tale ends with the narrator-avenger completing his stone and plaster task and feeling his heart grow sick from the dampness of the catacombs. But this is the rub. He feels his heart grow sick but it this truly caused by the dampness of the catacombs? Might the narrator-avenger experience pity and hear-break and a torment of consciousness in the days, weeks and years to come? If he is not mad, then perhaps; if he is mad, then perhaps not. Since this is a tale written by Edgar Allan Poe, madness is always a real possibility. Thus, we can imagine the narrator-avenger spending his remaining days drinking wine from his vaults with a smug, satisfied smile, knowing there is one more pile of bones in his collection.

Amazingly Entertaining

I read this story in college (English 2) and i must say this was probably the best horror story i've ever read.
First, i like to forget about the words he uses for a minute to explain that, although magnificently written, i take the story for how it was meant to be interpreted. And it was meant to leave you with a chill, and a feeling of despair that was so violently left in my stomach that i had to read it again and again.
I can't wait to be sitting around the camp fire to tell this story.
As far as the literary value, i am not shy in saying i didn't understand many of the words, but that's what a dictionary is for, and with the use of both books i came away thrilled with knowing and understanding what is probably one of the best horror stories ever written.
The story is a macabre tail of two men, both upper classmen mindful of their positions in society. One of them; seemingly distraught over past wrongs done, strives to avenge his house by comitting one brutal act. His prey however, does not know his fate until it has met him alone, and face to face...
Big Cheers to Poe for an amazingly entertaining story.

The Sweetest Revenge

This is Classic Poe... It was a required reading for me in school but after I read it I was compelled to re-read it. This story captivates the reader, while forcing you to ask, Why? Poe never really gets into the insult that occurred, but it is obivious that Poe is the master of Payback. He takes one of his greatest fears, being buried alive and transcends it into this story. What I find fascinating it the extent that he is willing to go to exact his revenge. Not only is his enemy buried alive, but he knows the person who has committed this endeavor

A very enjoyable study text

I really enjoyed this book, that I bought as a text book for my Theories of Personality Master Degree course. It is a University level text that explores many of the psychological theories and the lives of the men and women that created them, with a focus on the twentieth century and american psychology.
Starting with the obvious Freud and Jung, the fathers of psychoanalysis, Engler moves into exploring many of the later development of modern psychology and its personality theories. We find the theories of Fromm, Erikson, Klein as offshoots of psychoanalytic theory as well as very condesed and clear explanations of behaviorism, the cognitive approach, the existential approach and more.
What i loved about this book (one of the few books that i have decided to keep rather than resell after class) is that all approaches are so well explained, with a neutral stance, not biased towards one approach or the other. Engler presents all theories with great respect and you can really tell that she honors and loves all of these very wonderful great thinkers of our time....and as a result, you end up loving them too! Studying this text was a real pleasure...I would recommend this book to any University thinking about adopting it as well as to people that just want to learn more about western psychology of the twentieth century. A really pleasant text!

When I first ordered this book for my Theories of Personalities Psychology Course I wasn't sure what to expect. As soon as Personality Theories 7th Edition arrived, I began reading the first chapter to prepare early since we were on winter break. I loved this book and it is easy to understand. It clearly explains all the psychologists' theories in great detail. Don't hesitate ordering yourself or a friend a copy. I have not only learned more about my personality within the first three chapters, I have learned about family members and friends personalities, as well!

As a current community college student hoping to transfer to a UC sometime within the next year, this book gave me exactly all the answers I needed, as well as answers to questions I hadn't even thought of much before reading this book. She explained the transfer process very eloquently, in such ways that my college advisors still can't do after going to many appointments with them and feeling so frustrated and confused. I also found the back pages of the book to be extremely beneficial because it contained real life examples and questions about the transfer process and all the class requirements needed at the community college. If you're a prospective transfer student, I recommend purchasing this book because it is SUPER helpful and will help with filling out the application, writing the personal statement, and deciding which UC to ultimately attend/ which one feels right for you.

1) She knows what she is writing about. It's her job and she is master on it.
2) If you have a problem just send her an email and she will response very quickly.
3) She knows all the exceptions about transferring.
4) If you need any other preparation for transferring she will help you with all of that.

Ho-Lee-Cow! A must-have guide for anyone wanting to get into the UC system.

We got a copy of this book after a frustrating college admissions meeting - Another parent recommended it. We've been reading it in bits and chunks since the purchase, and am impressed (and relieved), not only with how well it is laid out, but also by the sheer scope of material covered. There are so many pieces to the puzzle that need to be aligned exactly right, which is annoying and daunting. But the good news is if you follow the book correctly, your kid really stands an excellent shot at getting into a UC. By the way - and this alone paid for the book - one of the things I did not know was that the UC’s do not look at high school grades and do not require SATs for transfer students. Plus, any earlier bad grades from college can often be erased. I swear - almost any 10 random pages are worth the price. Get it. Read it. Make your kid read it.

Excellent read

I received this book as a gift some years ago. I am a jazz fan (wannabe trad jazz banjo player), also classical, Americana, et al.; anything that is played with skill, intelligence and passion. This book is very well written and provides insight into the amazing lives of two of our many unheralded jazz virtuosos. I have read it more than once and taken their lessons on life and music to heart the best that my abilities allow. A very good read for anyone with a strong interest in the history of jazz and more broadly in music and life.

I knew about Willie Ruff from the last chapter of this book when it appeared in the New Yorker. The rest of the book is quite up to that standard. Reading this book helped me listen better to Willie and Dwike and gave me some insight into their experience.

The Jazzmen Wailed and Everyone Cried

"Willie and Dwike" has a cherished spot on my bookshelf for a number of reasons. I like jazz and it's an extremely well written book from one of my favorite authors (William Zinsser) about a wonderful jazz duo. Unfortunately, Dwike Mitchell passed away this month (April 2013) leaving a definite void in the musical landscape I enjoy. When "Willie and Dwike" was first published in 1984, it was glowingly reviewed by Edwin Wilson in the Wall Street Journal under the headline "The Jazzmen Wailed and Everyone Cried". The review centered around three musical pieces performed by Willie Ruff and Dwike Mitchell at a publisher's party to celebrate the book's release.

Here's an excerpt of that review: "For their finale the two men played a medley from "Porgy and Bess." When they reached "I Love You, Porgy," I felt my eyes fill with tears. The lyrical beauty of Gershwin's melody, the resonance and purity of Mr. Ruff's French horn and the delicate, mystical quality of Mr. Mitchell's piano affected me in a way I was not prepared for. When they finished playing, I discovered that almost everyone present had been affected in the same way. The publishing official, who previously had spoken perfunctorily stood to thank the musicians but his voice broke and he said simply that he could not remember when he'd last been moved in this way. People were astonished not only that they had been deeply touched but that it had happened so quickly and in so unlikely and unpromising a place.
The one person who was not surprised was the author, Mr. Zinsser. Since he first met Messrs. Ruff and Mitchell at Yale in 1973, Mr. Zinsser has followed their careers and traveled with them on a number of their tours. Wherever he saw them play - for homefolks in Muscle Shoals, Ala., for employees at the John Deere headquarters outside Moline, Ill., or for a group of restrained, bewildered music students at the Shanghai Conservatory in China - Mr. Zinsser observed their uncanny ability to communicate with audiences."

If that doesn't make you want to read this book, I'll eat my pork pie hat.

The Pistachio Prescription, written by Paula Danzinger was an excellent and entertaining novel about a teenage girl dealing with the troubles of being one. Let me introduce you to Cassandra Stevens Brown hair, brown eyes, very tall, 14. She has two siblings, Stephie, the typical seventeen-year-old sister; she has blonde hair, blue eyes. She has a smaller green-eyed red haired brother. Her mom is identical to her brother, and Stephie is identical to her father.
Paula Danzinger talks about Cassie (short for Cassandra), a girl just about to enter high school. As typical, there's a "cool" crowd, the student council people.
But this year, Cassie has a plan. An intelligent,deviousplan. Her friends all got together for a meeting discussing what they'll do, whom they will elect, and who will lead. Guess who gets chosen? Cassie for president! She feels quite insecure and does not want to do it, but gets convinced afterwards.
If you are wondering about the tittle, whenever Cassie feels angry, mad or sad, she eats red pistachios, a prescription of them is sure to get her joy back in an instant, the only bad part is tat her parent's don't like the idea of her eating them. Her mother says it's not ladylike, and her father agrees with her. Cassie has to hide her pistachios wherever she can.
When Cassie enters school, there's a new kid in town, Scott. They start talking and he is part of the plan to too. This book talks about teamwork, teenage troubles, school, and friends. It's a great page-turner that everyone is sure to enjoy. The pistachio prescription bye Paula Danzinger is a great book that everyone will enjoy.

This was one of my fav books when I was a teenager

I don't know why this book resounded with me so much, but I LOVED this book as a teenager. I read it at least ten times, probably more. I found it very soothing if I was upset about something.
