By some unexplained twist of fate that could only happen in shojo, Pryde is the only female student (Storm is a teacher). This makes the formerly insecure girl very popular with her peers, so much so that she is asked to join the Hellfire Club, which is hilariously reimagined as a parody of Ouran High School Host Club rather than a sinister organization of wealthy elites. Telgemeier and Roman deliver a delightful script that will appeal to old fans while being friendly toward new readers or fans of the X-Men films. The art by Anzu (TheReformed) is over-the-top shojo parody, with lots of screentone and flowers. (Aug.)

Recommended for shojo fans and X-Men fans with open minds.

I'm a huge long-time fan of both X-Men and shojo manga, so I was extremely excited when I heard this book was coming out!

I knew from the recent Wolverine manga that it would be a reimagining, so I wanted to go into it and not dwell too much on thoughts like, "He wouldn't act like this!" or "This is so wrong!" But I didn't even have those thoughts when I read this one! It was remarkable how most of the characters seemed true to their mainstream selves to a point; the changes that were evident were still really interesting and not too out of left field. (I'm a bit worried that one classic couple won't end up together due to an age difference [?], but they're not together in the comics anymore, either. And then there's Kitty and her classic comic love... Not happening here! My jaw kind of dropped when I saw him in his new form...)

The art was beautiful, unlike a lot of OEL manga I've read. (Which usually have great stories but the manga art seems a little "off.") And the art inside matched the gorgeous cover!

Shojo fans who don't even know about the X-Men will like this and I think X-Men fans who are willing to read it with an open mind may like it, too. Like one of the authors said his sister kind of said, X-Men has always been full of "bishounen" to me--'bout time someone treated the story that way!

I can't wait for the next volume! I want to see what other X-Men are joining the school.

A Love Letter to Shojo + X-Men Fans

A fresh take on the X-Men, mixing Xavier's School with Shojo manga (a la Ouran). Like a love letter to everyone who loves both.

We follow Kitty Pryde as the only current female student at Xavier's in her first months at the school. It's so fun to pick out each character in their new manga form (Beast is Totoro-like, Cyclops is still sanctimonious, except in teenage version, which means straight edge, ah, beautiful).
I can't wait for volume 2, I hear there will be more female students!

I liked it a lot more than I thought I would

the title says it all. As a girl, big x-men fan, and otaku I just could not say no. And I waited for so long with multiple publishing dates that were always changed. Anyway,I figured I'd have my fun laughing at it or maybe even hate it but as a manga it was very well written and the art was very VERY good. I rate it a four out of five all because of Marvel. Why do you create so many different realities Marvel?! Jean Grey is a teacher but Scott Summer's is a student? The robot colossus was on the line of good and bad, the sight of it turned me off but the laugh that followed allowed me to accept it. I wil buy the next volume for sure.
So if you're an x-men fan I suggest this manga. Even for guys who want a good laugh. And the powers/action is pretty good too. The shojo didn't overpower the manga which was good. I liked it a lot

Smell is one of the most primal senses: even newborns orient first toward the smell of their mothers' milk. And world history is full of the manipulation of smell, she reveals, starting with the palace perfumers of ancient Egypt; the Israelite women who concocted essences for temple sacrifices; the Romans, who anointed nearly everything; the alchemists, who searched for the Divine Essence; all the way up to modern pheromone researchers who hope, finally, "to snare the sex drive." Aftel traces this history with witty anecdotes (Ben Franklin's plea for a drug to make sweet-smelling farts, Petrus Castellus's advice to rub civet directly on the penis) and well-chosen alchemical and botanical illustrations. After this seductive introduction, she shifts into the how-to mode, discussing the actual making of a scent, a process of selecting certain "base notes," adding "heart notes" and finally the "top chords." This is by Mandy Aftel, who is an all-natural perfumer in Berkeley. She comes out of the same movement for the best natural ingredients that created Chez Panisse [restaurant], also in Berkeley, which started the foodie revolution. This is a wonderful, swoony, sensual book. She gives you the history of perfume through the ages, from the ancient Egyptians and Assyrians. She talks about how people have moved away from the idea of perfume as a ritualistic, meditative, aesthetic creation. The mass marketing of perfume, which includes a lot of synthetics and chemicals, has taken away a lot from the original idea of what perfume was and should be.

Aftel started her own atelier to make perfumes. She uses natural ingredients, so no synthetics, no chemicals, no fixatives. The downside is that all-natural perfumes don’t last that long, maybe two hours maximum. But she has striven to show that you can make elegant, complex, interesting, beautiful perfumes using all natural ingredients. She holds workshops where you can make your own perfume. The book is really a primer to go back to the roots and the ancient ideas of what perfume is all about. She talks about the meditative nature of certain essences, and notes their healing properties and the transcendental element of perfumery. It’s also gorgeously written.

People have read this book and developed their own interest in making perfume. It’s a seminal, inspirational book that many people cite. Earlier I mentioned the Swiss perfumer Andy Tauer. He trained as a chemist. He told me he read Mandy’s book, and after that he decided he wanted to make perfume. He started experimenting in a home laboratory, just mixing ingredients, and his first perfume was called “L’Air du Desert Marocain”. It was a huge hit. Luca Turin gave it five stars and called it a masterpiece. Tauer is now a highly recognised niche perfumer. He’s not a completely natural perfumer, but he uses up to 50% natural ingredients which is huge these days. There are many perfumes that use just a few percentage points of real ingredients and the rest is synthetic. That’s not to say you can’t make perfumes using all or mainly synthetics. There are some wonderful perfumers out there with very modern takes on perfumery – such as Comme des Garcons – and they have no problem using synthetics.

This book has inspired a generation of perfumers, and it brought people back to the original idea of what perfume was supposed to be. Mandy Aftel is a very spiritual person, who is able to meld the spiritual and ritualistic elements of perfumery with the pure, hedonistic, sensual beauty of it.

Inspired me to get to know my essential oils at the deepest level

I'm a practicing aromatherapist for 20 years who is self-taught for the most part. I've been wanting to make some vibrational sprays for my clients & customers, but didn't really know how to BLEND essential oils to get the outcome I wanted. It was basically hit or miss. This book gives a vast amount of practical information about how perfumery works: top, middle and base notes; categories of essences such as floral, fruity, woody, animal, earthy, resinous, balsamic, green, edible for Base notes; the 3 stages of the scent over time; essences that always go together well; how to create a blend for an individual, and much more. She gives a list of top, middle and base note essential oils to start with and what to add to your collection as you go along. Pages 60-64 explain exactly how to get to know each of your essences at the deepest level so that you can begin to see what blending the oils will result in. Then later in the book, she speaks in detail of the steps to creating a blend as well as giving recipes for blends such as how to make a top, middle and base chord blend, sensual blends, blends for meditation & bath, etc. Lots of information, recommended books, and resources for supplies. Very practical and the historical narratives are very interesting.

Has good information for beginners but can be a difficult read

It is worth purchasing and reading for the beginning natural, artistry perfumer or kitchen witch but probably not going to be an easy read for empirically minded chemistry types.

This is a book by Mandy Aftel, the artist and professional perfumer. It is about her personal "alchemy" as it relates to the art of perfumery as she sees it. This is not an alchemy or science based perfumery text. It's one artisans personal and practical philosophy on the artistry of perfume making with some perfume history and practical information to be gleaned by the eager or tolerant and patient reader.

Despite the authors extensive use of hyperbole and lack of clear organization of some of the material there is a lot to be gleaned from this book for beginners who aren't ready to dive head first into expensive or hard to find archaic perfumery texts or chemistry tomes. There are some tables of useful information that clearly outline which oil combinations are historically harmonious or that she finds harmonious and offers some simple formulas, harmonies and accords for the beginning perfumer to start with - although you will need at least $200-$300 worth of materials which you might already mostly have.

This book is about perfumery and how to blend perfumes from traditional "natural" materials (essential oils, absolutes, concretes, natural fixatives and animal products predominantly) for beginning perfumers. It seems like most of the material in this book is aggregated from other historical sources but then again I don't think one can write about how to make perfumes without going into the historical blending of perfumery; it seems like every book I've read so far on the subject does the same thing including the more science based books.

If you are wanting to learn more about the science of perfumery from a modern or more empirical perspective filled with technical information then this is definitely NOT the right book for you. If you are wanting an "inspirational", emotive filled how-to from the perspective of a professional artisan in order to get your feet wet then you will be able to glean useful information, it all depends on your leanings and/or tenacity - I didn't find it that inspiring personally. As an artist I got a lot out of it on a materials based and intuitive process kind of way. As an empirical leaning, science based beginning perfumer I was frustrated by the meanderings, hyperbole & lack of organization. The author comes from her personal experience and philosophy as a professional perfumer and relates her experience in a way that makes it sound like her religion. She writes some philosophically based opinions into the text as though they are fact so be aware of guru-ism. It is clear that the writer feels a strong connection with perfumery's historical alchemical, guild based and apothecary roots and her insight comes from her practical knowledge and experience as both a professional and artist. Some might find her writing style inspirational due to her frequent use of metaphor and grandiosity. Despite what I found to be mostly fluff I think the author does a pretty good job of bringing the material down to a human level and makes perfumery approachable enough to start blending for most people.

In case you can't tell I'm not fond of her writing style and am of the opinion that her writing style (or lack thereof) tends to cloud some of the value this book offers in the way of practical information. I'm sure she is a wonderful perfumer but a writer she is not. The alchemical aspect is not readily apparent besides the authors use of some "alchemical" terminology, exaggerations and hyping up the mysterious aspects of historical processes of perfumery, life and biology for effect. My wife reads archaic alchemy texts and couldn't get half way through this book. It seems that the alchemical reference is more for effect and marketing chaff in the same way jazz bands like to over use it. I'm sure she is well meaning and I'm sure she knows quite a bit about the history and contemplative process of alchemy, especially as it applies to her craft but it doesn't really come across in a way that is specifically related to alchemy in general for you practical or laboratory alchemy types. Instead it comes across as another marketing piece for the Aftel franchise way of doing things.

This is such an amazing book. If you have interest in aromatherapy & creating beautiful scents then this is the book. Mandy is a great writer. This book has it all: history, objective information and interesting facts on the topic. I found it very helpful. The recipes she gives are wonderful. The scents that she creates are divine.

Smile Inside is a wonderful resource for teachers, counselors, and other group facilitators. Although the book targets a specific age group, the activities can be easily modified for children in upper elementary grades through high school. The activities promote positive self-awareness, empathy, and compassion. I love having this book in my office because it is such a quick and easy resource to grab. The activities are simple yet impactful. When planning group sessions the activities in Smile Inside make it very practical. I have found that these sessions build student's self confidence and self awareness. This in turn combats against bullying and negative thinking towards others. I am thankful to have finally found a resource that focuses on combating the REASONS bullying and negativety occur, not just the actions themselves. Smile Inside should be in the hands of anyone working with today's youth.

"Smile Inside: Experiential Activities for Self-Awareness Ages 12-13" is a well-constructed, comprehensive resource book.

School counselors as well as educators may want to take a closer look at this book. It can be used during social skills lessons, as well.

I love the idea of self-improvement, and there are a variety of ideas to choose from within this text. This book alone is full of so many activities; it will definitely keep the educator supplied for weeks.

Author, Vanessa Lee, has done an exceptional job with this book. She left "no stones unturned" and appears to have touched upon many essential topics that allows for wholesome self-images and improvements within children.

I think what I love most about this book is the how it may usurp appreciation of the ideas of others. When children make sense of their own world, share with others their perceptions along with listening and learning the perspectives and perceptions of others, it makes a world of peace and understanding.

It is okay for children to learn about similarities, differences and interpretations of others. Who knows, they may learn something they may have never learned before, or gain an idea that may be useful to them. Each child is unique and has a thought, or opinion to share.

When children learn about the worldviews from the eyes of others it brings about peace in our world. This, in my opinion, is what diversity entails.

I "take my hat off" to author Lee for this wonderful tool. I strongly believe her book was created to bring about deeper and meaningful understanding one to another. I just hope many educators will utilize it, and many children will be helped from it, for it has great worth.

Personal Development Education at its best!

This review is for both “Smile Inside 12-13” and “Smile Inside 14-15.” I give both books Five out of Five stars.

Can I just start by saying that reading these books makes me smile? I’m an author of Young Adult Fiction and I really like young people, and have worked with this age group casually on many occasions because I think they really benefit from the extra care. “Smile Inside” is special because it is for them! These books contain such warmth and so many light-hearted activities. Smile Inside isn’t about “work”: it’s really about having a fun experience and growing into a whole human being in the process. This is a loving and much-needed approach to dealing with what can be serious wellbeing issues among teenagers, at a time when schools and governments are seeking to engage resilience training and personal development courses for students everywhere.

What is Smile Inside? It is an exciting resource for adults who work with young people, either generally, or in the areas of health and personal development. It includes detailed, ready-to-use exercises for specific age groups: the first book is “Smile inside 12-13” and the second is “Smile Inside 14-15;” although the right exercises from these books can be used with younger and older children, and even adults. It’s not a self-help book for teenagers.

…Although I do think teen readers could get a lot out of reading it, trying the exercises that can be done individually, and finding someone like the wellbeing co-ordinator of their school to run some sessions.

A highlight in “Smile Inside 12-13” is an entire section on Emotions, identifying them, thinking about them and understanding that we all experience them in the same way. In fact all of the exercises in “Smile Inside 12-13” encourage strong connections with peers. One of the things I wanted and needed most through my teen years were some strong, trustworthy allies my own age. Throughout “Smile Inside 12-13,” this connection-building is encouraged by teaching self-control, how to speak in a kind way, and how to stand-up for self and others. Role play, props, quotes and jokes are used to make a specific skill-targeted exercise engaging, while minimising “lecturing” from the facilitator (some of these exercises only take five minutes to set-up and explain). The approach is intelligent (no inadvertent talking-down) and considers the learning abilities of the group (some exercises utilise visual skills, others movement, others writing and listening, and so on.)

As it says in Smile Inside 12-13, “Smile Inside encourages participants to become masters of their own minds and behaviour- skills that are necessary for a smooth transition into adulthood.”

While there are some similar activities in “Smile Inside 12-13” and “Smile Inside 14-15,” they are both complimentary (the one builds up to the other, increasing the learning and target-age) and stand-alone (either book can be used without the need for the other.) The instructions are so clear and concise that a facilitator with no formal wellbeing training can pick up the text, get together their group of young people, and go for it.

A highlight of “Smile Inside 14-15” was finding that the exercises presented everything that I wanted to know when I was that age, in the way of social skills, talking to adults, interpreting behaviour, and making an impression on peers and adults. This is done in a structured way that makes the lessons easy to hold in the mind, while making self-exploration and skill-building almost like being in a magic school! So often teens are critised for “not knowing how to behave” but “Smile Inside 14-15” does away with that by confidently teaching young people, “this is what you can do, this is how you can do it.” Like “Smile Inside 12-13,” movement, props, writing exercises, jokes and role play are all used to engage students at their level, and with their issues (for example teen pregnancy was discussed in one example, as was stealing, mental health, and domestic abuse.) I’m of the opinion that teens will respond to this respectful approach to their humanity.

I intend to use these books to help me when I run book launches and workshops, and since reading them I feel more confident and better prepared with these resources right at my fingertips. I also welcome this information to stimulate ideas as I parent my two daughters and interact with the young people in my community. I can’t wait to see Smile Inside in every school… and the big smiles the young people have on their faces when they know they have the skills to deal with anything life can throw at them.

One of the best at understanding Somalia

Though describing a bygone era in Somalia, this book has few peers when it comes to giving an up-close-and-personal view of the Somalis. Anyone wishing to understand how the US and United Nations came to get so mired in this Horn of Africa country should read this book--and note the lessons that that were never learned before the 1992-1993 humanitarian and military intervention there.

The best book I've found on the subject of the Patriot Act.

"Living Under the Patriot ACT: Educating a Society" is easily the best book that I've come across on the subject of the Patriot Act. I wasn't very familiar with the patriot act until I decided that, as an American, I should know more about how our government is taking steps to protect us.

I quickly learned that trying to make sense of the complete patriot act, as written, is extremely difficult. What the author does here is condense the patriot act down into an easily understood narrative (in layman's terms) that made learning easier for me. It also helped that he doesn't beat the reader over the head with his views on things, and gives nods to readers from both sides of the issue. I was very surprised by how much information is contained in this book, and also by how much information is not being made public about the patriot act.

I highly recommend this book as a learning tool for anyone interested in the patriot acts, or government in general. All Americans should have this information.

As a club singer she had to contend with racism, sexism and advances from predatory men. For his exhaustive biography, Nicholson ( Jazz: The Modern Resurgence ) draws on written accounts of the legendary singer and on interviews with her childhood friends and musicians who have worked with her; he was unable to arrange to talk with Fitzgerald herself. Ella Fitzgerald's hit song "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" grabbed national attention in 1938, and over the next three decades she won much popular and critical acclaim. Born in poverty, she rose to perform at Carnegie Hall, becoming wealthy and well liked. Nicholson discusses Fitzgerald's musical influences, places her in the context of swing and bebop, and discusses her career highlights, including the Songbook albums. But he also bemoans the many silly songs she recorded to achieve wide sales and discusses her lack of depth compared with Billie Holiday. A 61-page discography by jazz historian Phil Schaap is said to include previously unknown recordings. Although this biography joins at least four others (some in German), it seems well researched and is recommended for general collections.

Ella the Greatest

A wonderful story of the greatest, sweetest, most modest, uncomplicated female singer ever. Respected and admired by her musicians and most especially by Frank Sinatra, a legend who adored her.

Enjoyable, enlightening, thoroughly researched.

I'd have given this book 4 1/2 stars given the option. The only reason I didn't give it 5 is that it gets somewhat dry towards the end, but I blame my attention span for some of that. It's full of fascinating stories, tidbits and opinions from musicians, producers, friends and agents who worked with Ella. You'll come away from the book with a new understanding of Ella the person and Ella the musician. You'll learn much about the times and the musicians who created the story of popular music and jazz in America. You'll also have a fascinating guide to her recorded music, the whys and the hows of it, the circumstances that made it wonderful or less than great. I recommend this book!

Every step in recording studio and no other informations

I read this book in for the first time in 1996. and now, second time around, still have the same feeling - Stuart Nicholson had obviously find easier to trace every step Ella Fitzgerald ever made in recording studio,than what she thought,felt and reasons behind her behaviour."A model in research and musical insight?" There is a year-by-year recording dates discography but not one single interview or even quotte!!Yes,Ella was a wonderful,gifted singer,but what eventually came out of this book (between the lines,if you bother to read) is that she was easily and ruthlessly pushed around by Norman Granz (manager) and made him a millionaire,toured 365 days in the year so Granz could collect Picasso paintings & move to Switzerland and that same Granz didnt have understanding for her,making a scene when she couldnt perform as her sister had just died (Duke Ellington stepped to protect her and got a slap on HIS nose instead).If Stuart Nicholson didnt have acces to do interview with Fitzgerald herself or at least some of her close friends,I wonder why did he bother to writte a book at all (just to dig some dirt & discover that she was - maybe?- a victim a child abuse,something that she kept behind her and didnt want to discuss,which we should understand and respect).No matter how appealing singer Ella was,I find repulsive idea of this big woman being lead around by her manager as beast of burden.And they said Billie Holiday was a tragic figure - hey, Billie at least had a good time! At the end of 245 pages,I find this book simply overrated - you can easily find Fitzgerald's discography in every jazz dictionary and perhaps as a subject of his book Nicholson should have consider Norman Granz instead.
