Wrong Author

The only problem with this book is that Amazon/sellers have it listed as Kenneth E. Hagin being the author. But it's actually Kenneth Hagin Jr. (and for those who know of them, there's a big difference) So . . . I actually bought it under false pretenses. Other than that, it's a good book.

Be careful when you buy a Hagin book. As the other reviewer says, some are written by his son, Kenneth W. Hagin. The father is Kenneth E. Hagin. The father's
books are excellent on faith and healing. No one writes as well as the father. His
books are clear, practical and very anointed.
Kenneth W. Hagin's books can not compare and usually are not worth reading.
This book is written by the son.

Based on material from the newly opened Russian archives, this is the first biography of Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov (1859-1919), the only intellectual in the Russian Imperial Family. This unique study provides insight into the last six decades of tsarist Russia through the experiences of the odd ball member of the clan. An historian and a biologist, the Grand Duke made major contributions in both these fields. A political liberal, he fought tirelessly for reform from within the system. His reformist views made him a pariah within his own family, and contemporary recognition of his accomplishments came more from abroad than at home.

Entering the military, as all Romanovs did, the Grand Duke eventually became hostile toward it and was in fact the only family member ever to formally leave military service. He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Berlin and Moscow and even won election to the French Academy―one of only two Russians to do so. As the political situation in Russia worsened, he urged the tsar to implement reforms, and he even participated in discussions of a palace coup. Exiled to Vologda after the Communist seizure of power, he was later imprisoned by the police and shot in January 1919.

The biography of a Royal Gentleman Scholar

This is the first full length English biography of Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov of Russia. The Grand Duke was the eldest of the 6 sons and 1 daughter of Grand Duke Mikhail Nicholaevich and spent most of his youth in the Caucasus where his father was Viceroy.
In later life Nicholas was a well known and respected historian. His works on Russian history and butterflies (both of them passions) are still respected today within in Russia. These interests of Nicholas and his genuine scholarship, along with his love and respect for France and its political systems made him an atypical Romanov.
This is a reasonably detailed and well researched biography that uses primary sources mostly from Russia and France. The author does not hide the Grand Dukes acerbic and cynical nature or try to gloss over his more unattractive traits such as his inability to keep a secret or his anti-Semitism.
However, at the same time the book does not really seem to pinpoint why the Grand Duke was a "Pariah in the Family". The period of Nicholas life during the Russian revolution and the months leading to his death are particularly well documented in some detail, especially in comparison to some of his earlier years.
This book is an important work in filling out the world of the Romanovs and brings to life a Grand Duke, who in most western works, has lived his life in the shadows until now - but who in France and Russia in his day was a celebrity based on ability as much as his imperial birth.

A Detailed, Fascinating Biography

I found this to be a refreshing and absolutely fascinating book about a "minor" member of the Romanov family (because he was intelligent, intellectual and hardworking). I think I have read all the Romanov biographies published in French or English, and I hated for this one to end!
I believe it does depict why Nicholas Mikhailovich was a pariah in the Romanov family, from the "White Crow" title on, although it is helpful if the reader can bring some knowledge to the book (beyond Nicholas and Alexandra), but it isn't essential.
I highly recommend this book to anyone fascinated by European literary and historical culture of the late 19th century, and to anyone whose interest in Imperial Russia goes deeper than wondering if anyone survived the massacre in Ekaterinburg -- this sheds some life on why they ended up there!

A fine book, but -

I would agree with comments above from other reviewers. This provides a very well written and superbly documented perspective on a "new" Romanov. The histories of the tsars can tend to be a bit reptitious.

Disappointment in the Grand Duke or "White Crow": While he is different than others, he is still an Imperial Romanov with all of the accompanying trappings and weight that pulled this house down. The times may be of more far more interest than the life.

Book production shortcomings: If ever a family tree would be useful, it is for this book. And how about a few more photos on quality paper? No dustcover. For the amazingly high price, this is a poorly produced book. Is the demand that low?

A fine book for those with a deep interest in pre-revolutionary Russia. This is not a book, as well done as it is, for the newer student of Russian history.

About the Author
Adam Ding, M.Sc., PQS, GSC, PMP, CC, LEED AP (BD+C), is a professional estimator with extensive experience in a variety of commercial, institutional, industrial, residential, heavy/civil, and sustainable infrastructure projects. He holds a master's degree in building construction from Auburn University, a professional quantity surveying diploma from the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, a project management professional certificate from the Project Management Institute, a gold seal certificate in estimating from the Canadian Construction Association, a competent communicator certificate from Toastmaster International, and a LEED accredited professional certificate from the Green Building Certification Institute. Adam has enjoyed a successful career estimating projects of varied sizes, ranging from large-scale cost planning to detailed trade take-off. Having bid countless construction projects, he developed a unique and easy-to-understand estimating approach. He has also taught classes at Auburn University and owns the copyrights for a number of spreadsheet estimating programs. Adam currently teaches in the construction management degree program at Red River College. Christmas Gift--- Construction Estimating Book with Excel Spreadsheets Coverage

This is a FULL-SIZE book with EXCEL spreadsheet estimating tutorials included. The major part of this book has comprehensive coverage on the construction estimating subject itself. Comparing with the earlier small manual I purchased (DEWALT Construction Estimating Professional Reference (Dewalt Trade Reference Series)) from the same author, I found this big book includes more extensive materials. For example, the sub-trade evaluation checklists from earthwork to electrical are now also presented in worksheet formats. Quite a few new features such as bid drawing evaluation, cost analysis, list of value engineering ideas are very interesting. Quantity take-off for all CSI trades and divisions are expanded to include solved examples with graphic drawings and sketches.....Anyway, this new book is wonderful as it incorporate all these new contents while keeping the original straight-forward flavour of "on-the-spot-answers".

However, what impressed me most is the Excel estimating portion of the book. Within less than 80 pages (the whole book is over 300), the author provides 7 step-by-step exercises to teach you all the essential Excel skills needed for construction estimating. No prior computer exposure is assumed, which suits me very well (I belong to the old generation and in our days, there wasn't a single computer on jobsite or office). Lots of graphic screenshots showing every step: setting up the worksheet, entering data, formatting, writing formulas and even making graphs/charts.... Each exercise has a construction-related theme: job basic info, cost summary sheet, quantity surveying for foundation, slab, beams, columns, wood framing, interior finishes, estimating condo units, pricing, quote evaluation, budget analysis...All these fit together very nicely within a few exercises. If you had attended a computer training class (e.g. MS Word) in the past, you will find this part of the book was written in a similar style (i.e. step-by-step). But what makes it stand out is that it is written specifically for construction people, so all the examples are applicable to building construction. Honestly I can not find any other book on the current market that could compare in this regard. If you want to use Excel as the primary estimating tool without purchasing expensive software, this book is way to go.

If I have to be a critic some sort, I will say the book apparently is written by a guy from the industry with lots of project experience. So it does not teach you how to read a scale etc. For college students, I believe it is better to use it with an actual project (drawings and specs). But regardless of your experience, this book is suitable for anyone who want to either upgrade their estimating skills or learn Excel estimating. Plus, the book is obviously underpriced considering the stuff it covers. Really an eye-opener for me!!!

Great Reference book!

If you are building a house, having one built or even doing a commercial takeoff for the first time, this book is a life savor! I purchased this book to help me on a project for a construction management class I was taking. We had to do a full take off and estimate of a building. This book was extremely helpful and the check list inside provided lots of help in deciding what jobs will fall under each trade.
