Urban Planning Today: A Harvard Design Magazine Reader, by William S. Saunders

American cities' penchants for single-use zoning and free-market development in pursuit of economic growth have produced problems that have long been recognized: grueling commutes and dependency on automobiles, social isolation, expensive public infrastructure, needless destruction of countryside. Eminent domain disputes rage on, despite recent Supreme Court decisions. Outdated public housing and failed single-function projects litter the landscape. Addressing these urgent problems and debating the public's role in urban planning, the contributors to Urban Planning Today report on real projects in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Omaha, Portland, and Vancouver. They bring varying, and sometimes divergent, perspectives from backgrounds in urban design and development, city and regional planning, criticism, and law to bear on the mixed bag of results observed in these cities. Noting the increasing influence of local nonprofit developers—such as Bridge Housing in San Francisco and Phipps Houses Group, Community Preservation Corporation, and NYC2012 in New York—as well as national organizations, the contributors also imagine clear and effective roles for government leaders. By creating a dialogue of cities' planning successes and failures, this book illustrates that adopting a single model universally will not work and that effective planning must indisputably demonstrate that any public action and private market reaction will be in the local community's interest—physically, functionally, financially, politically, aesthetically, and spiritually. Contributors: Jonathan Barnett, Lynn Becker, Peter Calthorpe, Susan Fainstein, Bent Flyvbjerg, John Kaliski, Jerold Kayden, Matthew J. Kiefer, Hubert Murray, Richard Plunz, Leonie Sandercock, Michael Sheridan. William S. Saunders is editor of Harvard Design Magazine and the books Commodification and Spectacle in Architecture and Sprawl and Suburbia, both from Minnesota. He is assistant dean for external relations at the Harvard Design School, and author of Modern Architecture: Photographs by Ezra Stoller. Alexander Garvin is president and CEO of Alex Garvin & Associates Inc. and adjunct professor of urban planning and management at Yale University.

An Exceptional Beginning to a Fascinating Series
By A Customer
I read this book when it first came out and was immensely impressed. I re-read this book six years ago when I belatedly realized that RKT had concocted a series instead of a stand-alone book. I was as impressed with the book the second (and even the third) time around as I was the first. I have since rushed to the store each year for the latest installment of the Karp-Ciampi chronicles and have not been disappointed.
No Lesser Plea is a well-plotted legal thriller with interesting bad guys, witty dialogue, believable legal antics, and fascinating main characters. If you a reader of this genre and you have no discovered RKT give this book a try.
There are several things I greatly admire in this series of books that does not come across by reading the first one. The most important thing is the development of the relationship between Butch & Marlene (and their family and hangers-on) over the course of the series. These characters become real people (rather more witty and articulate than the ordinary person) who have problems, disagreements, and day-to-day lives outside the pivotal legal issue being presented in the book. A second thing I like about the series is the development of current legal issues through the narrative format. By having Butch and Marlene on different sides of a question, the reader is exposed to moral and legal complexities of today's society. The last thing that I love about these books is their humor. There is at least one point in every book that sends me into gales of laughter. This is usually a bit of witty dialogue between Butch/Marlene and/or their children, but it also can be an exceptionally apt, pithy description of a situation or person. Anyway, this is one of the most alive series of books I have read and I would love to meet these characters (but not live near them since there does seem to be an inordinate amount of gunplay involved in their neighborhood).

A legal thriller that gets lost in its own antics
By DWD's Reviews
Robert K. Tannenbaum has created a well-regarded series of legal thrillers set in New York City and featuring D.A. Roger 'Butch' Karp. I have read others in this series. This one is the first and is set from 1970-1973.

The main legal focus of the book and the source of the title is the case of Mandeville Louis, a user of men and women who masterminds a murderous liquor store heist and causes his get away driver to die from an overdose. Louis has a plan to avoid punishment by faking to be mentally ill and eventually plea bargain his way to freedom based on time served in a mental institution rather than a harsher penal institution (shades of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest').

Butch Karp sniffs out the true legal motives of Louis and writes in magic marker on the case file 'No Lesser Plea' just in case it comes up for review again and he is not informed.

The legal story is quite good but Tannenbaum's story bogs down in the antics of the District Attorney's office (it reminds me of the movie M*A*S*H but without the excuse of an insane war to push the characters to the edge of sanity). Butch's friend Guma is insufferable (he drags pistols out of the evidence room to play cops and robbers and then promptly loses some of them, he sets of a C-4 charge in a reflection pool during an office garden party, has sex on his office desk and so on) and the whole office politics scene is too hurried. If Tannenbaum had paced himself a bit these antics would have been more tolerable. As they are presented, they distract from the legal thriller at hand.

Final Grade: C

Highly Recommended
By Bonner '62
I usually don't like court room stories. I'm more a private eye or police procedural typr. But I really liked this one. It gave what appeared to be a believable look at the workings of a big city DA's office (I know real big city assistant DA's are rolling their eyes at this but take a deep breath and relax). I was fully engaged by the story and liked how the author carried the story over time without losing steam. The office politics subplot was interesting and more than padding. I give 5 stars sparingly so don't take the four stars as faint praise. Find it and read it, the book is worth your while.

Blake Crouch on How the Television Series Twin Peaks Inspired Pines

On April 8, 1990, the pilot episode of Mark Frost and David Lynch's iconic television series, Twin Peaks, aired on ABC, and for a moment, the mystery of Who Killed Laura Palmer? held America transfixed. I was twelve at the time, and I will never forget the feeling that took hold of me as I watched this quirky show about a creepy town with damn fine coffee and brilliant cherry pie, where nothing was as it seemed.

Read on to find out what it was about Twin Peaks that inspired Pines at www.kindlepost.com.

From Booklist
Starred Review Ethan Burke is on his way to the small town of Wayward Pines to find two fellow federal agents who have gone missing. He has a bad car accident on the edge of town, waking up in the hospital and not at all sure of what is going on. The psychiatrist on staff tells him that he has suffered a brain injury and warns him not to leave, but he takes off anyway. The town sheriff is less than helpful, and, with no ID or money, Burke can’t reach his superior or his wife, and he starts fearing for his sanity (reminiscent of Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island). Matters turn ominous when Burke finds the ravaged body of one of the missing agents and realizes he needs to run for his life. Clearly, despite the idyllic beauty of Wayward Pines, something is seriously out of kilter: a helpful bartender disappears, picnicking mothers turn homicidal, and seemingly innocent children display maniacal tendencies. The suspense builds to an almost unbearable point, culminating with a twist that ratchets it up even further. Fans of Stephen King, Peter Straub and F. Paul Wilson will appreciate this genre-bending, completely riveting thrill ride, which mixes suspense, horror, science fiction and dystopian nightmare all rolled up into one unputdownable book. —Stacy Alesi

Good summer read, with a few caveats.
By Kerry Nietz
I picked up Wayward Pines after seeing the trailer for one of the episodes of the TV show. There were just enough hints of a speculative story in that glimpse to make me think it was something I might enjoy. Unfortunately, the show is a couple season along and not available on either of the streaming services I subscribe to. So, what better way to check it out than to read the book?

Overall, I thought it was a fun read. There was always enough mystery to keep me turning the pages, coupled with the occasional “what the...what?” moment to keep me guessing at the possible resolution. Was this town a figment of Ethan Burke’s mind? Did he step into some sort of portal here? Where was this all going?

The author tends to like to drop the noun from his sentences. I know other popular writers do that, and there is certainly a place for terseness and being succinct. But for some reason it bothered me in this book. Enough to make me notice while I’m reading. Not a huge deal. The text is fine as is, but I wonder if that isn’t what other reviewers are stumbling on.

If I had any dissatisfaction in the book it was in the “reveal” portion. In the context of the story, and in a purely secular reading of science it probably works. But it caused a pretty big “wha...?” and then “eh” moments for me. Again, not a bad ending in the context of the book, and I give the author credit for mentioning something I had to then research.

There was also one statement in the book that gave me pause: “No different than the gladiator games or throwing Christians to the lions or public hangings in the old West. An atmosphere of self-policing isn’t a bad thing.” Now, I realize the character saying this is morally ambivalent, but...throwing Christians to the lions was “self-policing”? Maybe if you’re ISIS. I know this is a nitpick, and may or may not have been the author’s feeling or intent. But, wow.

That aside, Wayward Pines was interesting, unique and gripping. A good summer read.

A Heart-Pounding Thrill Ride
By Madelon Wilson
Have you been watching "Wayward Pines" on television? I was really hoping to have had the time to read at least PINES, the first book in the Wayward Pines Trilogy, before the show aired last summer. Alas, I did not, and here we are in the second season already. How time does fly. I would add that watching before reading is something of a bigger distraction than reading then watching is, because it is only natural to try and place scenes in the book into remembered scenes from the show.

This is the story of Ethan Burke, Secret Service Special Agent and how he comes to find himself in the idyllic little town called Wayward Pines. It is speculative fiction at its best. You must suspend your disbelief and accept that time can be controlled without the need for time travel. Good speculative fiction almost always deals with the age-old question of just because something can be done, should it. More often than that the answer is a resounding NO! Of course, you need to read PINES and answer that for yourself.

Again, for watchers and fans of the TV series, I found PINES to be illuminating about areas that the show seemed to leave in limbo. Along with Burke, you will recognize most of the characters - Theresa and Ben Burke, Sheriff Pope, and, of course, Nurse Pam. However, you will be surprised at some of the differences in these characters in the book.

I found PINES to be quite the thrill ride where my adrenalin was pumping as I read some of the very graphic scenes. It is the kind of tale that you want to read in one sitting, but if life gets in the way of doing that, you can pick up where you leave off and never have to go back to see where you are.

I am looking forward to starting the second book in the trilogy, WAYWARD, as soon as I get this review posted.

Truly original speculative fiction
By Mal Warwick
You know the story, or at least you think you do. Our hero arrives in a small, out-of-the-way town in an unfamiliar part of the country . . . and everything seems off, just a little bit. There’s something strange going on, but it’s deep below the surface. Then the violence starts, and there’s no rational explanation. The suspense quickly becomes unbearable.

Been there, done that? Unlikely.

Been there, done that? Well, that’s what you’re likely to think much of the way through Pines, the first volume in Blake Crouch’s Wayward Pines trilogy. I certainly did. In fact, given my aversion to horror stories, I became so frustrated that I practically tossed the book aside and looked for something more satisfying to read. Fortunately, I chose instead to read through to the end. Pines is not a horror story, at least not in the conventional sense. It’s . . . something else. If you enjoy speculative fiction, you’re likely to love this book. You’ve probably never read anything like it at all.

Thought-provoking speculative fiction

Although Pines comes across as a conventional mystery or horror story, it’s worth the wait. The thesis of the book (and of the trilogy) is truly original. You may find it difficult to stop thinking about the story for a long time after you’ve read it. It’s easy to see how the trilogy was so quickly shaped into Wayward Pines, a high-profile television series, now in its second season. The pilot was directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Matt Dillon and Carla Gugino star. All three names will be familiar to contemporary movie-goers and television fans.

An unlikely story becomes even less likely

The story seems straightforward. Two U.S. Secret Service agents have disappeared in a tiny rural Idaho town on an investigation involving financial crime. (The Secret Service is an arm of the U.S. Treasury. Its brief extends beyond protection of the President.) A second team of agents is sent in pursuit of the first two — then they also disappear.

In a highway collision, one of the two new agents dies. The other staggers about town in a daze with no memory of what happened. His wallet, his gun, and his briefcase are nowhere to be found. Then the mysteries really begin.

Want to know more of the story? Read the book. It will give your mind a workout.

Our First Glimpse of Holy Terra
By Sean Dooley
One of the most common complaints I hear about the Horus Heresy series is that it's too Legio Astartes-centric. I can't deny that, for the majority of the Horus Heresy novels, this is true. The Horus Heresy is about the Astartes civil war and fratricide that shatters the budding Imperium. However, people that look at that aspect of the series and decide not to read are missing out on some great stories in which marines are not the focus. We saw this previously in Graham McNeill's Mechanicum, James Swallow's Nemesis, and to a great deal in Dan Abnett's Prospero Burns (while about the Space Wolves, our main protagonist is a human). McNeill again approaches the `other folks' involved in the Horus Heresy with The Outcast Dead, the latest entry in the best selling Horus Heresy saga.

The Outcast Dead is primarily the story of Kai Zulane, the astropath depicted on the cover, who has experienced severe psychic trauma as a result of the Gellar fields of his starship, the Argo, failing and loosing the terrors of the warp on its occupants. It is also the first HH novel to take place entirely on Terra. Through Kai, Roxanne Castana--another of our protagonists--and the other supporting characters, including Atharva, a Thousand Sons legionnaire and Yasu Nagasana, a `hunter', we get to see a fuller picture of Terra and the enormity of the Imperial Palace than ever before.

The novel, as with all of the Horus Hersey novels, is broken into parts. The Outcast Dead is partitioned very distinctly, the first half of the novel taking place establishing our characters and laying the grounds for the hysteria that Horus' newly discovered treachery has had on the people of the Imperial City. The second half of the novel is squarely focused on the aftermath of Magnus' interplanetary ride to Terra, and the devastation it brings to, in particular, the City of Sight.

As with a lot of McNeill's novels, the pacing of the story is methodical to the point that it could be misconstrued as slow. Like A Thousand Sons before it, McNeill does a lot of set up for our characters before jumping into the crux of the conflict. I've always maintained that the Horus Heresy novels aren't intended to be your typical `bolter porn'--in fact, I'd argue that the Space Marine Battles series of novels is built specifically for that purpose--so the slow burn that is the first 150 or so pages of The Outcast Dead doesn't bother me; however, I expect once this novel is officially released there will be a significant number of gripes because the build up of this novel is so gradual. In fact, I'd almost guarantee it as the primary conflict of the novel doesn't actually happen until Magnus' psychic arrival, a good 200 pages into the novel. I have to hope that McNeill's masterful crafting of his characters will assuage those that may see the lack of "action" as a detriment.

The characterization of Kai and the introduction to both the City of Sight and the Petitioner's City is fantastic. McNeill does a really wonderful job of painting a clear picture of these parts of the Imperial City. However, McNeill's detailing of the novel's Astartes--the "Outcast Dead" alluded to by the book's title--is even stronger. They are the remnants of the "Crusader Hoston Terra, presumably an Astartes council that is always present in the Imperial City with representatives from each Legion"--though I'm unclear on what exactly this Crusader Host is or of whom it is comprised; McNeill leaves this ambiguous. Atharva is the Astartes most focused upon, and his insights into what Magnus has done are really interesting. Equally intriguing is seeing the differences between Tagore, a World Eater with the Butcher's Nails implant, and Asubha and Subha, twins that do not yet have the implant. It is clear that the World Eaters, before Angron gets his hands on them, are a nobler breed, which was a nice surprise to see.

McNeill's real crowning achievement in characterization, however, is seen in Yasu Nagasana, a samurai-inspired psyker-hunter. The presentation of the noble-samurai ideals in the 40k setting came to me as a complete, yet entirely appropriate, surprise. The Imperial City is in Asia--Mongolia/Tibet by all accounts--so it makes sense that these ideals would persevere throughout time. We often see allusions to "old terran myth" in the novels, and McNeill crafts this one deftly. While Nagasana is only in the story briefly, his impact is felt in every scene (think Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, a film in which he only appeared for 16 minutes).

While The Outcast Dead is very much a character driven novel, there are some well crafted battle scenes in the novel, all of which involve the Adeptus Custodes. The scenes involving the Custodes always put me at odds with what I want to believe about the Emperor's Bodyguard, and they're no different here. We're supposed to believe that they are superior to Astartes in martial prowess, but the Horus Heresy books have thus far painted a different picture, with The Outcast Dead continuing in this grand tradition. It's really a small complaint, but I couldn't help be troubled by this fact when reading.

The Outcast Dead is a fantastic addition to the Horus Heresy series. Graham McNeill has crafted a wonderful character-driven narrative that paints our first real picture of life in the Imperial City, and really enhances what we know about the Navis Nobilite, the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, and Terra as a whole. Further, as with any good Horus Heresy novel, it provides some really unexpected surprised that serve to broaden the Horus Heresy canvas as a whole. While I know there will be detractors from the novel for any number of reasons (it is a slow-burn novel, it doesn't involve Astartes `enough') I wholeheartedly recommend The Outcast Dead. The story is a winner that serves to broaden what we know about the Horus Heresy universe.

What's up with the cover?
By Rhymoceros
Could have been one of my favorite Horus Heresy books in the series, but the ending just made the whole book pointless. The characters: love em'. The setting: loved it. Writing style: good to strong at times. Loved everything but the ending, I would have picked up a sequel to this book by this author in a heartbeat if it would have continued. Besides the ending, the one other thing that bothers me while I'm writing this now is the cover...could...have...been...epic.

I enjoyed the main characters immensely, the minor characters I could have done without, and I wonder why some were in it at all, they didn't advance the plot, but honestly, from the opening, I was hooked. Then the ending made its way to the back of the book and every single event of the story might as well not have happened.

Tell me if I'm wrong, give meh a new ending and I'll give it 6 stars.

A trip to Holy Terra!
By Jetpack
Another really strong, Horus Heresy book, this one gives you a rather neat look back at Holy Terra. What happened to those members of the Traitor Legions who were on Terra during the start of the Heresy? The Outcast Dead lets you find out the fate of those who had the misfortune of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It's also the story of a temple under the shadow of the Emperor, at look at navigators/astropaths and the scars of their job, and the underbelly of Hive life.

Really well done.
