About the Author
Joy Harjo is an internationally known performer and writer of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, the author of ten books of poetry and a memoir, Crazy Brave. A critically acclaimed poet, her many honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Josephine Miles Poetry Award, the William Carlos Williams Award, and the American Indian Distinguished Achievement in the Arts Award. She lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

An Inspirational Volume

Once has never been enough for my readings of this book. Harjo's poetry is both technically beautiful and inspiring. Engaging themes of womanhood, native American heritage, and the body run through this seamless volume of contemporary verse. Reading it has been a comfort, and some of the images contained therein were so vivid I was even inspired to attempt recreating them as visual art. This collection from highly talented writer and performer Joy Harjo comes highly recommended.

A reissue of a classic anthology of poetry, "She Had Some Horses" is a fine work from experienced poet and woman of the world Joy Harjo. Focusing on the subject of womanhood and the woman's place in society, "She Had Some Horses" is an enjoyable work of poetry, perfect for feminist reads. "Connection": A hawk touches down/the humming earth before Miami,/Oklahoma./You Old Shawnee, I think/of your rugged ways/the slick-floored bars and whiskey/sour nights when the softer heart/comes part./The Spokane you roam isn't City of the Angels/but another kind of wilderness./You speed in a Ford truck and it's five/in the morning, the suns and dogs/only ones up/and you go home to red earth/when you see a hawk/crossing wires/touching down.

Beautiful

This book is beautiful and the writing pulls yiu in. This was for a native American lit class, so I imagine it was easier to accept some of the ambiguity within the text. With that said, I would still have enjoyed this book without the study of what it means
