Special Agent Liv Bergen is almost ready to resign from the FBI and go back to limestone mining. From an earlier case (i.e., Noah’s Rainy Day), in which a kidnapper had grabbed her nephew, she’s afraid she is actually bringing trouble to her family members if she stays with the FBI. Special Agent Streeter Pierce, a maverick in the field, tries to get her to stay; she’s got great instincts. What better way to get her to stay than offer her the opportunity to try a cold case, that of her niece, Brianna, who had been abducted and killed seven years earlier. She was only ten years old. Of course Liv wants the case. She’d love to be able to find the murderer and provide closure for her sister, Barbara. She agrees to another six months and begins working Brianna’s case immediately. Her investigation begins to pull her in other directions – that of other children who were abducted and killed – all of them in very brutal means. Further investigation begins to show that many of the murderers have also met with brutal deaths mimicking the way in which the children were killed. Do we have a vigilante at work? Is he or she an insider?

Other than the reference to Noah, I didn’t feel it was necessary to have read the other four books in this series. This story in and of itself is a good stand-alone. On the personal side of the characters, Liv Bergen has a romantic relationship with Special Agent Jack Linwood, who was away on a fishing expedition for most of this story. However, Liv and Streeter have an interest in each other that I feel the author will develop down the line in a future work in this series. For the most part, I enjoyed Solomon’s Whisper although there were a few heartbreaking moments considering the brutality of the children’s deaths and the families left to grieve for them. There were quite a few people to watch; most of the characters were fleshed out pretty well. I rated the novel at 4 out of 5.

In reaction to her nephew’s involvement in her last case Liv Bergen has given Streeter Pierce her resignation, with the proviso that she’ll give it six months before making her final decision. Five months in Streeter gives the Brianna Keller cold case to Liv. Brianna was Liv’s niece, the daughter of her sister Colonel Barbara Bergen. Seven years ago, ten year old Brianna was abducted from her home during a slumber party. Brianna was found two weeks later along highway 95 between Hawthorne and Las Vegas. Streeter is breaking rules in an effort to show Liv she can help, rather than hurt, her family by staying with the FBI. Will it work or will the cost be too high?

Liv has found an apartment to sub-let and is considering taking her relationship with fellow agent Jack Linwood to the next level. Jack and Live are low-key, the relationship never overwhelms the characters or story. Thank goodness!
Brianna’s cold case leads Liv to other cold cases, all involving children. In addition Streeter assigns her a current high profile case in Ft. Collins. New police chief, Teresa Fiore has requested assistance from Streeter in the three month old badly botched case. The media has had and is having a field day with the incompetence and mishandling. Trial by media--sound familiar? While following new leads and avenues Liv and an agent in New York discover a frightening link between all the cases, past and present.

SOLOMON’S WHISPER, while still involving Liv’s family, is different in several ways from the previous books in the series. Despite the familial link it doesn’t feel as pervasive as it has in past stories.

Most of the cases will be easily recognized. Even if, like me, you don’t watch the news there was no way to avoid hearing about these. For that reason it was occasionally hard to read SOLOMON’S WHISPER. Crimes against children are the worst, bringing out the strongest emotions in most of us. What is justifiable in these instances? Would you be willing to look the other way if it meant keeping another child safe from suffering a like fate? Is a vigilante a hero or criminal? As Liv, Streeter, and others follow the many threads these questions and others come up. I confess to empathizing with the “bad guy” this time around. It was easy to understand their motivation and justify their actions in these circumstances, but that doesn’t make it right. Serious soul searching and conscience wrangling resulted during and after reading; this is the kind of book that sticks with you long after you’ve closed the covers.

The prior books shared the killers POV. Not this time around. All we see is the result.

The climax was chaotic, fierce, and more than the killer’s identity is revealed. I did not figure this one out and was in tears by the time I read the last words. Unlike with the previous books I have quite a few questions this time.

SOLOMON’S WHISPER is the most intense, emotional and heartrending entry in the series to date. Y’all don’t wanna miss this one.

Family vs. FBI
By Cristina Isabel
Let me just start off by saying, Mind Blown. In a very good way.

There, and now, the review. In this fifth installment of the Liv Bergen mystery series a lot is going to put Liv in a spiral. Liv is pulled into another case involving family, particularly her niece, Brianna Keller, but it's not just any case. It's a cold case, given to her by Streeter Pierce, mentor and friend, in hopes of convincing her to stay with the FBI and motivation for her to know she is keeping her family safe. As the case starts to unravel Liv begins to wonder which side some of her teammates are on while being close on the heels of a killer. But, someone has been stalking Liv and it has been keeping her on high alert. Can Liv bring this killer to justice after all these years? Will she come face to face with who is stalking her? A lot will hit home as sudden truths and intentions are revealed to Liv, keeping you at the edge of your seat, all the way until the very end!

Definitely loved the plot twists and character twists in this story, very surprised, shocked even. The chemistry between the characters are what make this book come to life for me as well as the thrilling moments that keep me wanting to turn the pages just to find out what happens.
